Bergin Grand Slam Lifts Cats over Roadrunners

August 2, 2013 - United League Baseball (ULB)
Fort Worth Cats News Release

David Bergin hit an enormous pinch-hit, game-winning grand slam in the bottom of the eighth inning on Friday night to propel the Fort Worth Cats to a 5-4 win over the Edinburg Roadrunners.

The Cats (41-26) trailed for the entirety of the game before the Bergin slam as the Roadrunners (33-34) put an unearned run across the board in the first inning off Cats' starter James Giulietti.

The Roadrunners extended their lead in the third before the Cats scored a run in the bottom half to make it 4-1.

The Fort Worth relievers came on to shut down the Edinburg bats for the rest of the game.

After Edinburg starter Mike Loseke gave up a hit and walked two batters with two outs in the eighth inning, manager Ozzie Canseco called on reliever Cullen Babin to face Bergin, who was pinch hitting for Kori Melo.

Bergin's game-winning shot was his 14th long ball and 54th RBI this season - both of which are tops in the United League.

A controversial moment occurred in the bottom of the second when Josh Band came up with runners on second and third. Band hit a hard ground ball up the middle and it glanced off infield umpire Mike Pierce and bounced into left field. The umpires ruled it as a dead-ball single and the runners were held at their bases. The next batter, Ryan Miller, flew out to end the threat.

Cats' reliever Matt Redding earned the win as he pitched one inning of hitless baseball and struck out two of the three batters he faced in the eighth.

Trevor Longfellow repeated that feat in the ninth to earn his second save of the season.

With the win, the Cats get the series win and look forward to a four-game series against the fourth-place Rio Grande Valley WhiteWings (32-36) beginning Saturday at 7:05 p.m.
