San Angelo Colts News Release
San Angelo, Texas --- The Colts won their sixth consecutive game and then had their winning streak snapped by the Abilene Prairie Dogs Sunday evening at Foster Field. San Angelo took game one of the doubleheader, 9-3, but then lost game two, 5-3.
The Colts took an early 4-0 lead in game one and never looked back. Centerfielder Ronnie Gaines, first baseman Daryl Jones, shortstop Landon Camp and designated hitter Cory Patton all scored in the first inning. Patton crushed a two-run homer into left field for his fourth round-tripper of the season.
San Angelo tacked on one more run against Abilene starter Kyle Nichols before he was pulled. In his first professional start, Nichols (0-1) gave up five runs on 12 hits in 3 2/3 innings for the loss.
The Prairie Dogs hit two home runs, but did little more against Colts' starter Brian Henschel. Nichols and left fielder Joe Weik both hit solo home runs. Nichols hit his ninth of the season to begin the second inning, and Weik slammed his team-best 11th at the beginning of the fourth.
Henschel (4-6) earned the win, pitching a complete game. In seven innings, he gave up three runs on seven hits. For Henschel, it was his fourth complete game of the year.
The Colts scored four more runs in the bottom of the fifth to ensure the win.
San Angelo came out hot to begin game two, as well. The Colts took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second, as left fielder Jamar Walton, catcher Michael Pair and shortstop Danny Hernandez all scored. Walton scored on Hernandez's RBI infield single, Pair scored on an error and Hernandez came home from third on a wild pitch.
However, the Prairie Dogs hit four home runs and came from behind to pick up the victory. Designated hitter Bryan Fogle hit the game-tying homer to lead off the seventh, and then centerfielder Jason Martin hit a two-RBI, inside-the-park home run to give Abilene the go-ahead runs. Martin had two homers, giving him five on the season.
Colts' reliever Michael Hacker (2-3) took the loss, surrendering Martin's second home run. Abilene starter Woods Fines (4-7) allowed three runs, two earned, on five hits in six innings and got the win. Reliever Kevin Gelinas retired the Colts in order in the bottom of the seventh for his second save.
San Angelo is now 32-31, while Abilene is 23-38. This series concludes Monday night at Foster Field.
