The Thunder (22-40) got on the board in the top of the third when a double steal allowed Lyndon Poole to score from third for the 1-0 lead.
After McAllen scored a run in the top of the fourth, the Roadrunners (39-23) got a run of their own in the bottom of the fourth. Pascual Del Real hit an RBI double that allowed Cristobal Santana to score cutting the Thunder lead in half 2-1.
An RBI single by Miguel Alfonzo in the top of the fifth allowed Craig Hertler to score making it 3-1.
McAllen picked up two more in the top of the seventh. With runners at second and third, a wild pitch allowed Herlter to score and then a throwing error on the same play allowed Mike Goss to score extending the Thunder lead to 5-1.
Alex Smith (2-2) picked up the win after pitching six and two-third innings allowing just one run five hits.
The Roadrunners added a run in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI ground out by Stantrel Smith that scored Osiel Flores from third but Yunier Colon recorded the final out giving McAllen the 5-2 victory.
Matison Smith (5-4) took the loss after allowing five runs on nine hits in the six and two-third innings pitched.
The Roadrunners and Thunder will play the third game of their series Sunday night at Edinburg Baseball Stadium. Dave Dinelli (3-6) is expected to face Frank James (4-5) with the first pitch scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
