Dogs Steal Split

Abilene Prairie Dogs News Release

SAN ANGELO, TX - He stood outside the visiting clubhouse between games of Sunday's double header and said he was ready. And, when the Dogs had their backs against the wall in the top of the seventh inning, it turned out he was. Bryan Fogle led off the top the last frame on Sunday night with a game-tying blast to left field to give the Dogs new life and eventually help them snap a seven-game losing streak. Soon after, Jason Martin blasted a two-run inside the park homer to give Abilene the lead and help the Dogs split a double head in San Angelo, 9-3 and 5-3.

As the game moved to the top of the seventh, San Angelo starter Michael Hart took to the hill in an attempt to turn in the Colts' second complete game of the day. However, Fogle led off the inning by launching a bullet to left field, tying the game at three. Zach Welch then worked a walk and stole second. After Eddie Browne dropped down a sacrifice bunt, Martin sailed a rocket to center field. Ronnie Gaines initially moved in on the ball before it flew over his head and rolled all the way to the fence. Welch scored easily from third and Martin blistered around the bases for the Dogs' first inside-the-park homer of the season and a 5-3 lead.

All five Dogs runs in the second half of the double header scored on home runs. Kyle Nichols launched his 10th homer of the season to leadoff the second inning and give the Dogs a 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Abilene starter Woods Fines gave up the only three Colts' runs of the game. Jamar Walton and Michael Pair slashed one-out singles to set up Danny Hernandez. As the Colts' shortstop chopped a bouncer toward third base, Fines fielded the grounder but threw wildly to first base, allowing two runs to score and Hernandez to reach third. He would eventually score on a wild pitch and give San Angelo a 3-1 lead.

The Dogs bounced right back in the top of the third, pulling to within one on the strength of Jason Martin's fourth home run of the season.

After the three-run second, Fines put his performance on cruise control, using five strikeouts to retire the last 12 batters he faced.

Kevin Gelinas retired the side in order in the bottom of the seventh to finalize the Dogs first win since July 21, snapping a seven-game slide.

In the first game of the double header, the Colts' scored four runs in the first inning off knuckleballer Kyle Nichols - who was making his first professional start on the mound - and four more (three unearned) off reliever Matt Larkins in the fifth as they cruised to a 9-3 victory.

Nichols and Joe Weik homered in the first game of the double header, meaning that the Dogs connected with six round trippers on the afternoon. Abilene now leads the league with 46 homers.

Brian Henschel was the winning pitcher in game one.

The Dogs and Colts conclude an eight-game series when the teams collide on Monday night at Foster Field. Hear the game on 106.9 KLGD or on the internet at abileneprairiedogs.com beginning with the First Financial Pregame Show at 6:55.
