Colts Rebound to Whitewash Majors

March 26, 2012 - Ontario Hockey League (OHL)
Mississauga St. Michael's Majors News Release

Home ice has certainly proved to be an advantage through the first three games of the Mississauga St. Michael's Majors and Barrie Colts opening round playoff series.

One game after being blanked 4-0 in Mississauga, the Colts bounced back to down the Majors by the same 4-0 score in front of 3,460 fans at the Barrie Molson Centre on Monday night.

The Colts now lead the best of seven series 2-1 with game four going Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Hershey Centre in Mississauga.

Ivan Telegin, who scored twice in the series opener in Barrie, notched a goal and an assist, while veteran Ryan O'Connor also scored a goal and an assist for the hosts, who were much more disciplined than in game two in Mississauga.

Majors Head Coach/General Manager James Boyd noted while his team was competitive, they may have gotten away from what made them so successful in the second game of the series.

"We were killing a lot of penalties and that makes it tough to win games and generate offence. I did like our intensity but we have to direct more pucks at the net, and we have to take fewer penalties.

"I won't fault our work ethic, I thought we battled, but when it became 2-0 the ice certainly seemed to tilt in their favor. We get right back at it tomorrow night and that is a good thing for us, we just have to regroup fast."

After a scoreless first period, the Colts took a 1-0 lead on a power play goal by Telegin from Steven Beyers and Aaron Ekblad at 6:33 of the second period. O'Connor gave the Colts a 2-0 lead from Telegin and Beyers at 10:16 to put the Colts up 2-0 and end the second period scoring.

Shots were 12-9 Barrie in the first period of play and 16-8 in the second for a two period total of 28-17.

Anthony Camara opened the third period scoring on the power play, giving the home side a 3-0 lead from Daniel Erlich and Chris Buonomo at 14:21. Mark Scheifele polished off the Colts attack with yet another power play goal with just three minutes to go in the game from Buonomo and O'Connor to ice the 4-0 victory.

Brandon Maxwell stopped 31 of 35 shots he faced in goal for the Majors, while Mathias Niederberger made all 22 saves for the shutout win.

Barrie's power play was a definite factor, going 3-for-9 in the contest. The Majors were unsuccessful in their three opportunities with the man advantage.

Game four goes Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at the Hershey Centre, before going back to Barrie on Saturday, March 31st at 7:30 p.m. for game five. Tickets to Majors home games are available by visiting www.ticketmaster.ca or by visiting the Hershey Centre box office.
