San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - A night after being held to five runs in 14 innings in a doubleheader sweep by the Edinburg Coyotes, the San Angelo Colts broke out in a big way Friday night, scoring in their first five innings to get their biggest win of the year, 18-2 over the Edinburg Coyotes, in a game shortened to six-and-a-half innings by the threat of lightning in the area.
The game was delayed 36 minutes because of rain before Alex Merricks (3-0) made his first start of the season for the Colts. Edinburg (33-38) struck first though, as Daryl Jones hit a two-run homer that scraped off the top of the wall in right-center before going over.
But in the bottom of the frame, San Angelo (43-27) started the onslaught against Carlos Jan (1-3) and it never stopped. The first seven batters all reached before Jan was pulled, as the Colts banged out six runs, scoring on singles by Andres Rodriguez and Aaron Cone, before an RBI double by Jason Landreth and an RBI single by Bryan Frichter ended the very short outing for the Edinburg lefty.
San Angelo poured it on in the second. The first four batters all reached off Bryan Heaston, including a three-run homer by Cone to make it 9-0. The Colts got four more in the third, one in the fourth, and four in the fifth. Landreth went deep again, his seventh in the last eight games, a two-run shot in the third, and Jose Torres also crushed a two-run shot in the fifth, his 15th.
The Colts were finally held scoreless in the sixth by the man who started the game in left field for the Coyotes, Brandon McConnell. After the home run by Torres greeted McConnell, the former pitcher in the Twins' organization struck out three of the final five he faced, giving up just one hit.
Meanwhile, Merricks cruised through five innings, striking out nine to keep his record perfect on the year. Matt Greanead and Chris Weast pitched a scoreless inning each to finish it off.
After the top of the seventh, the umpires called the players off the field for a 12-minute lightning delay after the lightning alarm went off, and ultimately ended the game.
