Harlingen, TX-The Laredo Broncos only managed 2 runs, but it was enough as they beat the Harlingen WhiteWings by a score of 2-0 on Friday night in Harlingen. The Broncos now head home for a 6 game home stand starting with a 3 game series against the San Angelo Colts on Saturday night. For more information you can call (956)-723-BASE (2273).
The Broncos would score first in the 3rd inning. Ivan Reyes led off with a single and then stole 2nd base. Luany Sanchez drove him in with a single making the score 1-0.
The WhiteWings looked like they were going to score in their half of the 3rd as they had the bases loaded with 1 out. However, Broncos starter Gregorio Martinez would get Amadeo Zazueta to fly out and Ryan Fox to strike out keeping Laredo in the lead.
The Broncos would tack on another run in the 4th inning. Matt Imwalle led off with a double and went to 3rd on a ground out by Ben Tinius. With 2 away Anthony Bennett knocked in Imwalle with a single giving Laredo a 2-0 lead.
Both starting pitchers were in control for the most part of the night. The WhiteWings starter Brock Nehls wiggled in out of jams throughout his 7 innings of work. He gave up 2 runs on 8 hits. Gregorio Martinez was better for the Broncos in his 7 innings. He gave up 0 runs on 5 hits. He walked only 1 batter and struck out 10.
The WhiteWings would threaten in the 8th against David Wasylak. With 2 outs, Wasylak would walk both David Cardona and Trey Hendricks. Kevin Griffin however, would foul out to end the threat keeping the Broncos ahead by 2.
David Watkins came in for the 2nd straight night looking for the save. The first batter of the inning Joel Gonzalez would walk. Then after a strike out, Matt Lawman singled to put runners on 1st and 2nd. David Fowler would strike out for the 2nd out. But, Amadeo Zazueta would walk to load the bases for Ryan Fox. Fox would strike out to end the game as the Broncos held on for the 2-0 victory.
The Broncos scored 2 runs on 8 hits and committed 1 error, while the WhiteWings scored 0 runs on 6 hits and committed 1 error.
The Broncos improve to 36-39 on the season. The Broncos will be back in action on Saturday when they play game 1 of a 3 game series against the San Angleo Colts in Laredo at 7:35.
