San Angelo Colts News Release
SAN ANGELO, Texas - The San Angelo Colts never trailed in Tuesday night's series opener at the Dilla Villa, and when the Amarillo Dillas finally tied the game in the seventh inning, the Colts (7-6) bounced right back and took advantage of an Amarillo error to defeat the Dillas 4-3 in front of 3,086 fans.
With the game tied at 3-3 in the eighth, Jose Torres hit a slow chopper to shortstop with one out and nobody on. The shortstop, Josh Ashton, who committed two errors on the night, charged in, fielded, and made an errant throw that went past first baseman A.J. Johnson and allowed Torres to go all the way to third on the play. Right-hander Ralph Roberts then came in to face Adam Miller, but walked him and on ball four, threw a wild pitch, allowing Torres to score to give the Colts a 4-3 edge.
Dillas left-hander Jesse Rodriguez, who started the inning, was charged with the unearned run and took the loss, falling to 0-1 on the year. Colts closer Brian Daly pitched a 1-2-3 ninth inning with two strikeouts for his second save, after Ryan Mulle held the lead with a scoreless eighth.
The Colts took a 2-0 lead in the first off Amarillo starter Ron Lowe, who went six innings, allowing three runs on six hits with seven strikeouts and three walks. Andres Rodriguez hit an RBI single and Adam Miller also drove in a run with a single, though Bryan Frichter was thrown out at home plate on the play by former teammate Sam McLain, playing in his first game as a Dilla after the Colts released him over the weekend.
Amarillo made it 2-1 in the second when they opened the inning with four straight singles off Colts starter Brian Henschel, who picked up a no-decision in his best outing of the year, going 6 2/3 innings, giving up three runs on eight hits with four strikeouts and one walk. He avoided further trouble in the second by getting Ashton to hit into an inning-ending, bases loaded double play, the second double play the Colts turned in the first two frames. The teams traded single runs in the sixth and Amarillo tied the score at 3-3 in the seventh on a two-out RBI double by Jonathan Reynoso, which drove Henschel from the game. Justin Robinson (1-0) then came in and retired Keith Brachold to end the inning, stranding the go-ahead run at second and putting him in a position to pick up the win, since the Colts took the lead in the next half-inning.
The Colts continue this three-game road series against the Dillas at 7:05 p.m. on Wednesday, May 28. The Colts return to Foster Field on Friday for a three-game weekend set against the Aces.
