Erie Otters News Release
The Erie Otters power play scored three times against the Barrie Colts Saturday night but it was not enough as they succumbed to their fourth straight defeat, 7-4.
Brett Cook put the Otters on the board 5:01 into the game with his first goal of the season on the power play. Anthony Luciani camped behind the net and dished off a pass to Cook trailing on the short side of goaltender Dalton McGrath, allowing Cook to slam in the puck to put the Otters in front.
The Colts were able to tie the game at the 13:55 mark of the first, as David Shields slipped in his own zone, allowing Alexander Burmistrov to skate in untouched and shoot the puck between the legs of Otters goaltender Shane Owen.
In the second period, the Otters capitalized late on the power play as Luciani fed a streaking David Broll in the slot, and Broll slipped the puck through the short side of McGrath to put the Otters up 2-1 at 6:21. Burmistrov tied the game for the Colts less than three minutes later, and assisted on Michael Sgarbossa's tie-breaker at the 11:21 to give them their first lead of the game.
The Otters picked up another power play goal at 14:13 with Shields' first goal of the season. Shields floated a shot off of a Colts defender into the net to tie the game at three.
Barrie would take control for the rest of the game, scoring two more goals late in the second period to take a 5-3 lead after 40 minutes. Luciani notched his eighth goal of the season on a nifty backhand with less than three minutes left in regulation, but the Colts were able to seal the deal with an empty net goal with 21 seconds remaining.
The Erie power play finished three-for-six, while Owen made 33 saves in taking the loss. Luciani had a goal and two assists, while Cook tallied a goal and an assist.
