McFarland gave Sudbury a brief lead, opening the scoring a short handed goal at 6:22 of the first period with a quick shot from the right wing by Plymouth goaltender Matt Hackett. But Plymouth took the lead on a pair of power play goals - Jenner at 13:42 (hard wrister from the high slot under the bar) and McCauley (deflection in front of the Sudbury goal at 16:10. Plymouth led, 2-1, after one period.

The Whalers put the game away with three unanswered goals in the second period. Heard's first OHL goal at 0:59 of the period capped excellent Plymouth pressure and Heard batted the puck knee-high at the left wing side of the goal past Sudbury starting goaltender Alain Valliquette. Brown scored his first of the season on another Whalers power play at 5:28 with a hard shot from the right circle that went under the bar. Seguin's first goal of the evening came at 7:43 on a four-on-four situation when he stole the puck from a Sudbury defenseman, went in alone on Valiquette and scored. Plymouth led, 5-1, after forty minutes.

The rout continued in the third period, with McCauley scoring his second of the night and sixth of the year at 4:17and Seguin at 8:04 to give Plymouth a commanding 7-1 lead. Kontos for Sudbury (11:52) and then Seguin (12:26) and Meurs (18:35) completed the scoring.
