San Angelo Colts News Release
Laredo, Texas--- In front of a packed house at Veterans Field, The San Angelo Colts (16-7) defeated the Laredo Broncos (7-16) for the second straight night with a final score of 12-7. Chandler Barnard picked up his fifth straight win in as many starts as the Colts remain atop the United League standings.
It didn't take long for Broncos starter Luis Arroyo to find himself in trouble, after a single and an error placed Bradley Goldsmith at second base, with no one out. Jason Diaz layed down a sacrifice bunt, Arroyo threw over the head of Luis Ugueto who was covering first base, Goldsmith came into score as Diaz went to second. Colts led 1-0. Two batters later, with Diaz at third, Jason Landreth sent a sacrifice fly to centerfield scoring Diaz, bringing the colts lead to two as Gaines advanced to third. With two outs in the frame, Nick mahin lined a single to left bringing home Gaines and just like that the Colts led by three.
The two best offenses in the ULB continued to trade blows until the sixth inning when the Colts widened their lead. As San Angelo led 6-4, Hunter Jobes started the inning off with a double. Danny Etkin followed with a single placing running on the corners. Butch Ballez delivered the Colts third straight hit as Jobes scored, pushing the lead to three. With Etkin at third and Ballez at first, Diaz doubled down the left field line scoring Etkin, placing runners on second and third. With two outs in the inning, Bryan Frichter singled to left scoring both runners and the Colts found themselves with a six run advantage as the scoreboard read 10-4.
With a great fourth of July crowd, Laredo refused to go away as they rallied in the bottom of the seventh. After four hits and a walk, the Broncs scored three runs cutting the Colts lead in half.
However in the top of the ninth, the middle of the Colts order would add two more. It was the first pitch that Frichter saw leading off the inning as he sent a towering shot to far away left centerfield making it a four run Colts lead. Two pitches later Landreth followed suit with the same result as the Colts went up 12-7. It was an easy bottom of the ninth for Chase Vacek delivering three up, three down, for the ballgame.
Chandler Barnard (5-0) won a fifth consecutive outing, giving him the most wins in the United League thus far. Barnard went six innings, allowing three earned runs, while striking out two. Luis Arroyo (0-2) earned the loss, going five innings, giving up six earned runs.
The Colts plated 12 runs while collecting 11 hits. Bryan Frichter had three RBI's, adding a homerun (5) and a single. Jason Landreth also homered (8), including two RBI's, the other came from a sacrifice fly. Hunter Jobes accumulated two hits, a single and a double, and an RBI.
