
Broncos' sloppy play costs them in loss

Laredo, TX - The Laredo Broncos rallied but couldn't overcome 4 early errors as they lost to the San Angelo Colts by a score of 12-7 at Veterans Field, on Saturday.
The Colts took advantage of shaky defense by the Broncos in the 1st. Bradley Goldsmith led off with an infield single and went to 2nd on a throwing error by 2nd baseman Luis Ugueto. Jason Diaz then tried a sacrifice bunt, but a throwing error by Broncos' starting pitcher Luis Arroyo allowed Diaz to be safe and advance to 2nd, and allow Goldsmith to score from 2nd as well. Diaz would then steal 3rd base, and that was followed by a walk to Ronnie Gaines. Gaines would then steal 2nd base, and with 1 out he would move to 3rd with Diaz scoring on a sacrifice fly by Jason Landreth. Nich Mahin then came up and delivered a single scoring Gaines and giving San Angelo the 3-0 lead.
The Broncos answered in their half of the 1st. Luis Ugueto doubled to start off the inning and then scored on a double by Miguel Ortiz. Mario Mendez then singled moving Ortiz to 3rd. Mendez would then steal 2nd with Argelis Nunez batting. Nunez then grounded out to the shortstop scoring Ortiz on the play. Mendez would then head to 3rd on a attempted pickoff play that went into centerfield. He was then waved home by manager Ricardo Cuevas but was thrown out at the plate. Laredo cut the lead to 3-2.
The Colts extended their lead in the top of the 3rd. With 2 outs and the bases loaded Nick Mahin drew the walk to score a run. Then Hunter Jobes hit an infield single which scored 2 runs, which gave San Angelo a 6-2 lead.
The Broncos answered back in their half of the 3rd. Mario Mendez led off with a deep solo home run into left center field, his 4th of the season. Argelis Nunez then reached 2nd base on a dropped fly ball by right fielder Hunter Jobes. After a ground out moved Nunez to 3rd, he scored on a groundout by Andres Santos making the score 6-4.
The Colts once again extended their lead this time in the top of the 6th. Hunter Jobes led off the inning with a double and went to 3rd on a single by Danny Etkin. Butch Ballez then came up and hit a rbi single scoring Jobes. That hit knocked out Broncos' starter Luis Arroyo as Julio Pinto came in. after 1 out, Jason Diaz doubled into left field scoring Ballez and moving to 3rd was Etkin. Then with 2 outs, Bryan Frichter hit a 2 run single scoring both Etkin and Diaz. That gave San Angelo a 10-4 lead.
Arroyo only went 5 innings for the Broncos giving up 9 runs, 6 of which were earned. He gave up 7 hits, walked 4, and struck out 5.
The Broncos got closer in the bottom of the 7th. Miguel Ortiz led off with a single, and then with 1 out, scored on a single by Argelis Nunez. Luany Sanchez then smacked a double off the center field wall scoring Nunez from 1st. After Sanchez stole 3rd base, David Cardona hit a rbi ground out scoring Sanchez and making the score 10-7.
Broncos' reliever Tristan Crawford pitched 1-2-3 innings in the 7th and 8th, but ran into trouble in the 9th. Bryan Frichter and Jason Landreth hit back to back home runs to start the inning. For Frichter it was his 5th of the season, and for Landreth his 8th of season. That gave San Angelo the 12-7 lead.
Chace Vacek came into the game in the 9th in a non save situation. He would get the Broncos to do no damage, as they lost by a score of 12-7.
The Broncos scored 7 runs on 13 hits and had 4 errors while the Colts scored 12 runs on 11 hits and had 2 errors.
The Broncos are now 7-16 on the season while the Colts are 16-7. The Broncos will next be in action Sunday July 5th, as they play the finale of a 4 game series against the San Angelo Colts at Veterans Field at 7:30.
