Colts Fall Short On Monday Against Broncos
June 15, 2010 - United League Baseball (ULB)
San Angelo Colts News Release
After coming back to win the night before the Colts got out to an early lead but still found themselves having to rally at the end, this time falling short on Monday night in an 8-6 loss. San Angelo took on the Laredo Broncos in the first meeting of the two at Veteran Field.
Colts righty Alex Morales (0-1) pitching for the first time in over a year was terrific as he struck out four shutting the Broncos out for the first two innings. However his opponent Eric Eden (1-1) also shut down the Colts during the first two frames. It was in the third that scoring began for both teams. San Angelo jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead when Jason Crosland hit a grand slam his sixth homer of the year and third in two days. The homerun and four RBIs gave him the league lead in both categories. That one swing would be two-thirds of the Colts offense.
The Broncos answered right away scoring three in the bottom of the inning on back to back RBI singles by Kenneth Gilbert and former Colts 2009 playoff hero Nick Mahin, followed by a sac fly RBI by Dustin Sprull and suddenly it was a one run game at 4-3. The Colts defense really let them down in the fourth. Morales started the inning off well striking out the leadoff batter, his sixth of the game. Alex would not help his own cause though dropping an easy pop fly to the mound which would cost him as the next batter Jason Diaz doubled home a run and the score was tied 4-4. Morales was removed after that batter but pitched well overall. Another error by Colts right fielder Adam Hale, who dropped a fly hit to right, allowed Diaz to score and the Broncos had their first lead at 5-4 to take their first lead, one they would never relinquish.
Laredo would score for the third straight inning in the fifth getting three, highlighted by a Gabe Memmert (2) two-run shot, to make it 8-4. The Colts had a late rally though, scoring two in the seventh on RBI doubles by Ronnie Gaines and Josh Collazo to close it to 8-6. The Colts would load the bases in the ninth with two outs, but Jason Crosland trying to be a hero again lined a bullet the other way at Nick Mahin who snared it at first before it could go down the right field line for the final out.
The Colts play game two of this four game series on Tuesday as right-hander Ezequiel Astacio takes the hill for San Angelo against righty Dimitri Camareno for Laredo. It all begins with the Kemps pre-game show beginning at 7:20 with the first pitch at 7:35 on 1260 KKSA.
