San Angelo Colts News Release

Robstown, TX– It was a roller-coaster ride, but San Angelo snapped its Central Baseball League 11-game losing streak with a 9-6 victory over Coastal Bend in front of 2,302 Thursday night at Fairgrounds Field in Robstown. The Colts rocked Aviators starter Mark Persails for six 1st inning runs but had to hold off a ferocious Coastal Bend rally that nearly tied the game and then post two late insurance runs to lock down the win.

San Angelo sent 10 batters to the plate in the fateful 1st frame – Jorge Diaz led off the game with a single to center, stole second, went to third on a Tony James base hit and then scored on Bert Aguilar's single to left field. Lee Laskowski followed with a single to load the bases...then Joe Mercer lined a base hit to right to plate James and give the Colts a 2-0 lead. Two pitches later, Tyson Boston grounded a double over the third base bag to knock in Aguilar and Laskowski...Joe Gilbert then delivered a sacrifice fly to drive in Mercer...and Brian Kent capped the big inning with an RBI single to center to put San Angelo out in front 6-0. The Colts scored a run in the 2nd to extend their lead to 7-0 and knock Persails out of the game.

The Aviators answered with four runs in the bottom of the 2nd against Colts starter Jon Gutierrez – run-scoring singles by Cris Colon and Noah Peery and RBI groundouts by Carlos Castillo and J.R. Cortez cut San Angelo's lead to 7-4. In the 5th Coastal Bend pulled to within one when Trey Salinas delivered a clutch two-out single to knock in Marcus Knight and Eric Battersby. Now down 7-6, the Aviators looked poised to take the lead in the 7th when they loaded the bases with one out...but Salinas' hard grounder heading to right field struck Guerrero running from first to second, and the play effectively short-circuited the Coastal Bend rally. Joe Gilbert gave San Angelo some breathing room in the 8th with a solo homer off Aviators reliever Jorge Huerta...then in the 9th the Colts made it 9-6 on Aguilar's RBI single to plate Matt Sanchez. San Angelo closer Quentin Jones made quick work of Coastal Bend in the 9th, striking out the side to lock down the victory and give the Colts their first win since July 28th.

Gutierrez (1-1) went six innings to earn the victory for San Angelo, with Jones picking up his fourth save of the year...Persails (1-3 with the Aviators, 5-8 overall) was tagged with the loss. Salinas had three of the Aviators 10 hits on the night; Sanchez went 3-for-5 to pace a 15-hit Colts attack. Thursday's loss dropped the Aviators to 16-23 in the second half (40-47 overall), but Coastal Bend stayed two games behind Amarillo for the final West Division playoff spot thanks to Edinburg's 3-1 victory over the Dillas...with the win, San Angelo improved to 11-28 in the second half and 34-52 on the year. Game three of the series is slated for Friday, with the Aviators sending righthander Jose Luis Lopez (9-4) to the mound...the Colts will counter with righty Dave Therneau (2-4).
