
Former Pensacola Pelican Phil Devey to pitch for Canada at the Olympics

Durham, N.C. -- Former Pensacola Pelican Phil Devey, who earlier this season was sold to the Seattle Mariners, was named to the Canadian National Baseball Team on Wednesday, Aug. 11 and will pitch in the upcoming 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens, Greece. Devey, who was in his first season with the Central Baseball League, now pitches for the San Antonio Missions, Seattle's Double-A affiliate.
While with Pensacola, Devey was 3-1 with a 1.46 earned run average and opponents were hitting .229 against him. In 37 innings of work, he allowed 33 hits, struck out 35 and walked 12, while allowing six earned runs. Currently, Devey is 1-5 with a 4.50 ERA with the Missions.
The Canadian Baseball Team begins its run for a gold medal on Sunday, Aug. 15 at 6:30 p.m. (10:30 a.m. CDT) against Chinese Taipei.
