Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - The Colorado Rapids have signed forward Michael Barrios to a one-year contract extension through the 2022 MLS season, with a club option for 2023, the club announced today.
"Mikey demonstrated his qualities from his first day with the group and quickly became an important piece to our success in 2021," said Pádraig Smith, Rapids Executive VP & General Manager. "We're delighted to extend his time with the club and look forward to his seeing his continued impact on the pitch as we look to build on a historic season."
Barrios, 30, originally joined the Rapids via trade from FC Dallas in January 2021. In his first season in Burgundy, the Barranquilla, Colombia, native led Colorado with eight goals while adding six assists, second on the team only to captain Jack Price with 12. He was named Players' Player of the Year and Fan Favorite while also winning the Golden Boot at A Burgundy Affair, the club's annual end-of-year awards gala.
Barrios has been one of the best wingers in MLS since he joined FC Dallas in 2015. His 50 assists are fourth-most in MLS since then and he is one of three players in MLS with at least 35 goals and 45 assists in that span.
After six seasons in Dallas, Barrios left as the club's second all-time leading scorer with 31 goals and 44 assists. With Barrios, Dallas was able to capture the MLS Supporters' Shield and the U.S. Open Cup in 2016, and along with being named club MVP in 2017.
