Colorado Rapids News Release
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. - The Colorado Rapids have acquired forward Michael Barrios and the 21st overall pick in the 2021 MLS 2021 SuperDraft presented by adidas via trade from FC Dallas in exchange for an international roster spot and the 15th overall pick in the 2021 SuperDraft, the club announced today.
"We're excited to reinforce our roster with a player of Michael's quality," said Pádraig Smith, Colorado Rapids Executive VP & General Manager. "Michael has consistently been among the top chance creators in this league and offers blistering pace that's hard to match. We believe he'll be a strong addition to our group as we build toward next season."
Barrios joins the Rapids from FC Dallas where he leaves as the club's second all-time leader in combined goals and assists (75). During his time in Texas, the 29-year-old helped Dallas capture the 2016 MLS Supporters' Shield and the 2016 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup, while being named the club's MVP in 2017. Barrios has finished among the top assist leaders in MLS twice during his six years in the league (T-4 in 2017, T-3 in 2019) and is one of just five players to register at least 30 goals and 40 assists in that time span.
A native of Barranquilla, Colombia, Barrios began his professional career at Uniautonoma FC before joining FC Dallas in 2015. Barrios received a U.S. green card in 2018 and thus does not occupy an international roster spot.
