THE GAME:
The Colorado Crush head out for the first of back-to-back road games when they travel to San Jose for a Friday night contest against the SaberCats on April 6th at 8:30 p.m. MT.
Colorado has never beaten San Jose in the regular season (0-5 all-time) and has dropped all three games at the HP Pavilion. The Crush's only win versus the SaberCats came during the 2005 playoffs in the Divisional Round (56-48 on May 2, 2005). In their five losses to San Jose, Colorado has lost by an average of almost 26 points.
The Crush-SaberCats match-up will pit two of the AFL's most successful coaches against one other- Mike Dailey for Colorado and Darren Arbet for San Jose. Dailey and Arbet stand fourth and fifth respectively in all-time career wins in league history. Arbet leads the head-to-head battle against Dailey coached teams 5-2.
One key to Colorado's success against San Jose may be their ability to capitalize in the red zone. The SaberCats have the AFL's 3rd ranked red zone defense. Leading the Crush's red zone attack though will be FB/LB Robert Thomas, who was named the league's Ironman of the Week for a second time this season in the last three weeks. Thomas has rushed for at least two touchdowns in three straight games and is one rushing score away from setting a new Crush single-season rushing TD mark. He is currently tied with Willis Marshall for first in Colorado team history with seven rushing touchdowns.
After beginning the season with three consecutive road games, the San Jose SaberCats finally enjoyed the friendly confines of the HP Pavilion last week and defeated the Tampa Bay Storm 69-49 for their second win of the year.
In the victory over the Storm, SaberCats' QB Mark Grieb completed an astonishing 88% of his passing (23-of-26) for 284 yards and eight touchdowns. In his career versus the Crush in the five regular season games, Grieb has thrown 29 touchdowns on 94-of-118 passing (80%) for 1,371 yards and only one interception.

HEAD COACHES:
MIKE DAILIEY, Colorado (102-66, 11th Year): Mike Dailey enters his fourth season in Colorado and 11th as head coach in the AFL, after becoming the Crush's second head coach on June 26, 2003. Dailey joined the Crush following 13 seasons in the Albany/Indiana Firebirds organization, including the final seven as head coach.
One of the most successful and well-respected coaches in AFL history, Dailey's teams have compiled an overall record of 102-66 record, a winning percentage of 60.7. His teams have also made eight postseason appearances and he has won five division titles and two championships. Following the Crush's 44-40 victory over Kansas City on March 10, 2007, Dailey became only the fourth head coach in AFL history to surpass the 100 win mark. He currently stands as the league fourth all-time winningest coach.
In his first season in Colorado, Dailey helped guide the Crush to the largest turnaround in AFL history, inheriting a 2-14 team and leading them to an 11-5 record in 2004. In 1999, Dailey led the Albany Firebirds to their only ArenaBowl championship and was named AFL Coach of the Year. Before being named head coach of the Firebirds in 1997, Dailey served as an assistant in Albany for five seasons.
Dailey began his AFL coaching career with the Washington Commandos where he served as offensive/defensive line coach in 1990. He joined the Firebirds organization in the same capacity in 1991.
Prior to the AFL, Dailey worked as an assistant coach at Towson State University and was the offensive coordinator at Montgomery College-Rockville (Md.). Dailey got his start in coaching in 1981 as a 22-year-old assistant at Georgetown Prep High School in Rockville, Md. The move to coaching followed a semi-pro football career in the Washington D.C. area.

DARREN ARBET, San Jose (95-44, 9th Year): Two-time Arena Football League Coach of the Year and ArenaBowl champion Darren Arbet enters his ninth season as head coach of the San Jose SaberCats and his second as the club's general manager.
Last season Arbet guided the SaberCats to their seventh straight winning season and playoff appearance by going 10-6, the sixth time in his eight seasons the team has posted a double-digit regular season win total. The team also captured its fifth Western Division title under Arbet (sixth overall) and advanced to the semifinal round of the playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons.
Arbet enters the 2007 campaign with 93 career wins, the fifth-most in AFL history, and his .689 overall winning percentage is the third-highest among coaches who have been involved in at least 25 games. Arbet has also compiled the third-best postseason winning percentage (.667) and is one of just six head coaches in league history to amass 10 playoff victories.
Under the direction of Arbet San Jose has enjoyed unmatched success vaulting the franchise to elite status in the AFL. Since the start of the 2000 season, Arbet's second as head coach, the SaberCats have claimed two ArenaBowl championships (2002, 2004), compiled the most regular season wins (77), the second-most playoff wins (10) and have averaged nearly 12 victories a season.
In addition, the club has set league records for regular season wins in a season (13 in 2002), overall wins in a season (16 in 2002), consecutive regular season wins in a season (12 in 2002), regular season wins to end a season (11 in 2000) and the longest regular season win streak (15 in 2000-01).
Arbet's ties to the AFL date back to the late 1980s when he played two seasons as a fullback/linebacker with the Los Angeles Cobras (1988) and Maryland Commandos (1989) before a wrist injury that required three surgeries ended his career. During his playing days, Arbet lined up against former Philadelphia head coach Michael Trigg, who was a quarterback with the Detroit Drive, and Georgia Force offensive coordinator Steve Thonn, who played WR/DB with the Chicago Bruisers.
LAST TIME THESE TEAMS MET:
SAN JOSE (5/6/07) - The Crush's regular-season frustration against the San Jose SaberCats continues, and this time, it was a series of events at the end of the first half that robbed Colorado of a chance to snatch its first-ever win at San Jose.
Two SaberCats touchdowns in the final minute turned a 28-27 Crush lead into a 40-28 intermission deficit, and the Crush could never catch up, falling 61-56 in the teams' Week 15 game at the HP Pavilion. The loss dropped the Crush to 0-5 in regular-season duels with the SaberCats; the Crush defeated them in the quarterfinal round of the playoffs last year.
Colorado dropped to 10-5 with the defeat, while the surging SaberCats improved to 9-6 and snared a tiebreaker advantage over the Crush should the 'Cats win and the Crush fall in next week's action. A win over the Arizona Rattlers at Pepsi Center (Friday, 7 p.m. MDT) would give the Crush the top seed in the American Conference playoffs for a second consecutive year.
The Crush had its chances throughout the game, and traded scores with the SaberCats through much of the first half, taking a 28-27 lead in the final minute. Howwever, the SaberCats would score twice in the final 37 seconds, striking on a 57-yard kickoff return by Charles Pauley and a 42-yard Omarr Smith interception return as time expired, putting the Crush into a 12-point halftime hole.
San Jose took football on the opening drive of the second half and marched towards a third consecutive touchdown, one that put the Crush down by 19 points. Colorado's defense would force a pair of stops on subsequent drives, but the Crush could not capitalize, turning the ball over on downs twice in the second half.
A 48-yard touchdown pass from John Dutton to Ahmad Hawkins on the final play of the half narrowed the final margin to five points.
Dutton completed 29 of 43 passes for 376 yards and six touchdowns, but tossed two interceptions. Willis Marshall snared 10 passes for 103 yards and ran for a score, while Damian Harrell grabbed nine passes for 129 yards and four touchdowns.
CRUSH LAST WEEK:
DENVER (4/1/07) - Robert Thomas' one-yard rushing touchdown with six seconds remaining in the game lifted the Colorado Crush (3-2) to a 55-48 victory over the Nashville Kats (2-3) Sunday afternoon. Colorado closed the game scoring 21 straight points sparked by two huge defense plays in the game's final minute.
With 48 seconds left in the contest and Nashville looking to extend a 48-41 lead, Thomas- the contest's Ironman of the Game- blocked a 30-yard field goal attempt. Four plays later Crush QB John Dutton found Willie Quinnie on a 13-yard touchdown pass to knot the score at 48 all with 32 seconds left on the clock. On the Kats first play of their ensuing possession, Colorado DB Chris Angel hauled in his second interception of the day and returned it to the Nashville one-yard line setting up Thomas' go ahead run.
Colorado controlled most of the first half and led 24-14 with 50 seconds left in the second quarter before Nashville turned the game's momentum completely around. With 27 ticks remaining, Kats FB Dan Alexander rushed in for a nine-yard score cutting the Crush lead to just three points. The Nashville defense then forced a fumble on the Crush's next play setting the stage for a Jeff Smoker to Cornelius Bonner nine-yard touchdown strike and the Kats first lead at 28-24 as the half ended.
Both teams traded scores through the third and majority of the fourth quarters as Nashville hung onto their lead until the game's final dramatics.
THINGS TO WATCH:
YOUNG BLOOD:
The Colorado Crush took the field in Week 1 with four rookies on their active roster. Not since head coach Mike Dailey's arrival to Colorado in 2004 has he had that many first-year players on his Crush active roster to begin a season.
The Crush currently have six rookies on their active roster with four of those players starting.
LOCAL TIES:
This season the Crush have found a lot of good-young talent right in their back yard. Here is a list of players that have Colorado ties:
- DL QUINN DORSEY attended Manual High School in Denver.
- FB/LB ANTHONY DUNN attended Centauri High School in Manassa, CO and later played at the University of Northern Colorado.
- OL BRETT HUYSER played his collegiate football at the Air Force Academy.
- WR BRAD PYATT has played football at all three levels of his career in Colorado (Arvada West High School, Northern Colorado and the Crush).
BUILDING A WINNING TRADITION:
The Crush are the winningest team in the AFL regular season since head coach Mike Dailey's arrival, having tied for the league's best record in 2004 (11-5) and finishing with the American Conference's top seed in 2005 (10-6) and 2006 (11-5).

After finishing their inaugural season 0-8 at home, the Crush are now 24-6 under Mike Dailey (2-1 in the postseason) at Pepsi Center. Two of the six losses consist of a field goal in overtime (42-45) vs. Indiana in 2004 and a 51-48 Chicago win in 2005 on a field goal with three seconds remaining.
LET'S MAKE IT THREE:
Last season, Colorado was the only team to repeat as a division champion. This year, they'll look to become the first team since the New York Dragons (2003-2005) to repeat as divisional champions in three consecutive seasons.

HE KEEPS GOING & GOING & GOING....:
A true AFL Ironman, Kyle Moore-Brown is in his 13th season in the league and has never missed a game. ArenaBowl XIX marked his AFL record 176th consecutive start. The first 139 all came with the Firebirds organization before he signed with the Crush prior to the 2004 season.

STEEL CURTAIN:
After allowing 14 sacks in 2003 (12 on Dutton), the Crush pass protection has been stellar under head coach Mike Dailey.
The team allowed just four sacks in 2004, and none after Week 6. In 2005, Colorado allowed just six sacks, while holding 10 opponents sackless on the year.
Since 2004, the Crush have allowed just 17 sacks in their last 45 regular season games (total of 2,105 plays).
WHAT A RUSH:
Through five weeks of the 2007 season, FB/LB Robert Thomas has made a huge impact in the Crush's ground attack.
Thomas is currently tied with Willis Marshall for the Crush single-season rushing touchdown record with seven. Thomas is also tied with John Peaua for fifth all-time in Colorado career rushing scores.
