Pittsfield Colonials News Release

For the second straight night, a Johnny Welch homerun proved to be the difference as the Pittsfield Colonials third baseman homered in the bottom of the ninth inning on Saturday, lifting the Colonials downed the New Jersey Jackals 4-3.

Welch's heroics came leading off the bottom of the ninth as he took a Jeff Gogal offering the other way, clearing the rightfield wall. The two teams were forced to the bottom of the ninth due to Jeremy Slayden's homer in the top half of the frame that knotted the game at 3-3.

With New Jersey leading 2-1, the Colonials took the lead in the bottom of the sixth as Matt Nandin led off with a single and then stole second. A groundout by Danny Bomback moved Nandin to third where he stood for Angel Molina who singled back through the middle to score Nandin to tie the game at 2-2. Rafael Cabreja followed with a single, moving Molina to third. Welch stepped to the plate and hit a ball deep in the hole at short. Mike DeJesus fielded and threw to second to force out Cabreja, but Welch beat the relay throw to first enabling Molina to score to give Pittsfield a 3-2 edge.

Welch now has two hit for the Colonials, both of the homeruns, to go along with a team leading four RBI.

The Jackals cracked the scoreboard first in the top of the fifth inning, plating a pair of runs on an RBI single from Argenis Reyes and a sacrifice fly from Leonard Davis to take a 2-0 lead. The Colonials got one of the runs back in the bottom of the inning when Billy Mottram clubbed his first homer with Pittsfield to right-centerfield to slice the NJ advantage to 2-1.

Matt Lyons (1-0) earned the win in relief for the Colonials, tossing the ninth inning. Miguel Flores started for Pittsfield and turned in a fantastic outing, going 7.2 innings, surrendering two runs on five hits. Gogal (0-1) pitched a perfect eighth before surrendering the Welch homer in the ninth to suffer the loss.

Pittsfield now gets set for a four game series against the Rockland Boulders. Dan Cevette will get the start for the Colonials against John Muller for the Boulders. First pitch is set for 2:00 p.m. with the pregame show on 89.7 WTBR set to kick off at 1:45.
