Carolina Cobras News Release
GREENSBORO - Following their Week 4 loss against the Jersey Flight, the Carolina Cobras had another tough battle in the snake pit for a country showdown against the Lions for country night. The Cobras came out with an aggressive game plan led by quarterback Sam Castronova against the (3-1) Columbus Lions.
Castronova led the charge in the first half for the Cobras, tossing three touchdowns for 119 yards on 10 passes. Despite a strong first half by the Cobras defense, the penalties played a huge role in negating two interceptions as well as giving the Lions a free first down that Columbus took full advantage of. Castronova lit up the Lions defense in the first half scoring three passing touchdowns using three different receivers (Ings, Lewis, Bryant). However the Cobras struggled on defense, giving up 22 points in the second quarter despite holding the Lions to only eight points in the first. Special teams showed low performance going into halftime going 0 for 3 in point after attempts.
In the second half, Cobra Nation saw a change at quarterback as James Summers came in to relieve Sam Castronova who lit a spark on offense by scoring on his first drive with a two-yard touchdown run, despite the excitement Summers did not manage to score a touchdown pass tonight and the Lions offense kept their foot on the peddle throwing four touchdown passes in the second half securing the 54-30 final score in Greensboro.
The Cobras (1-3) will head into a bye week in search of adjustments for the rest of this season. The Cobras improved on both 3rd down & 4th down conversions improving to 60% on fourth downs and 40% on third down conversions where they struggled the most against Jersey. Moving into week 6 the issue Carolina faces is finishing drives with in the endzone by putting more points on the board the Cobras are now averaging 40 points a game on offense (last in NAL). They will need to turn that around to beat the NAL defending champs the Jacksonville Sharks (1-2) who defeated the undefeated Albany Empire tonight. The Cobras will continue to have home field advantage as their match against the Sharks will be in the Greensboro Coliseum Saturday, July 10th. The Snake Pit advantage will be needed as the Cobras look to gain their first win at home. Get your tickets now by calling 336-445-7273 or visit carolinacobras.com.
