PASADENA, CA (Monday, April 22, 2002) - Los Angeles Galaxy midfielder Cobi Jones was named to the 23-man U.S. World Cup roster today by U.S. National Team coach Bruce Arena to take part in the 2002 FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan. It marks the third such selection for the 31-year-old Jones, who competed in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups in the United States and France, respectively. In Korea, the U.S. World Cup team will face Portugal, Poland and South Korea in Group "D".

"First off, it is a great honor to represent the U.S., for my self especially, because it is my third time and very few players have the ability to say they've been to three World Cups," said Jones. "It is also a relief at this point to know that I have been named to the roster."

Jones, who is one of two remaining inaugural season Galaxy players (Mauricio Cienfuegos), is the club's all-time leading scorer with 159 points on 54 goals and 51 assists. The 5-7, 145-pound Jones has been a member the U.S. National Team since 1992 and is the all-time cap leader for United States with 153 international appearances.

A native of Detroit, Michigan Jones is one of seven players in the roster who will be representing the U.S. in their third overall World Cup, including U.S. captain Claudio Reyna (Sunderland - England), Earnie Stewart (NAC Breda - Holland), Joe-Max Moore (Everton - England), as well as the three goalkeepers: Brad Friedel (Liverpool - England), Kasey Keller (Tottenham - England) and Tony Meola (Kansas City Wizards).

"We are all proud of Cobi's well deserved selection to the U.S. World Cup team, his selection is a testament to his ability now as it was in the two previous World Cups," said Galaxy VP/GM Doug Hamilton. "As the all-time caps leader for the United States, he has maintained a level of play at the international stage that few players can boast and is a great source of pride for both the national team program and the Galaxy.

The U.S. will reconvene in Cary, N.C., on May 1 for 10 days of training at the State Capital Soccer Park before embarking on the team's three-game "Nike Road to Korea".

The Galaxy, MLS's lone unbeaten team, takes on the Colorado Rapids in the Soccer Saturday Game of the Week this Saturday, April 27, at the Rose Bowl. Game time is 1:00 pm (PT) and will be broadcast live on ESPN2. The Galaxy match can also be heard live over the airwaves on ESPN Radio 1110 AM (English) and on KTNQ 1020 AM (Spanish).
