Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Andrew Parrino's bases-loaded throwing error in the bottom of the ninth allowed Jhon Florentino and David Cook to score the tying and winning runs, respectively, as Corpus Christi edged San Antonio 5-4 Sunday.
Three-hole hitter German Duran found himself in the batter's box with one out and the bases full because Missions closer Craig Italiano (1-1) suffered control problems. Italiano walked lead-off hitter Marcos Cabral, who was replaced by Florentino. Italiano then hit pinch-hitter Cook and walked J.B. Shuck. T.J. Steele struck out before Parrino gloved Duran's chopper on a 1-1 pitch and sailed his throw wide left of the plate and catcher Luis Martinez.
In the visitor's half of the ninth, it was Hooks closer Danny Meszaros (2-0) who couldn't hold a one-run lead. Cedric Hunter's lead-off single and a Beemer Weems double knotted the score at 3. Three batters later, Mitch Canham's sacrifice fly plated Weems for a 4-3 Missions advantage.
San Antonio threatened in the third when Parrino reached on an infield hit and moved to second on a same-play throwing error by Hooks pitcher Sergio Perez. Parrino advanced to third on a ground out but was left there when Hunter lined to center.
Weems opened the Missions fourth with a walk, but was gunned out 9-4-2 (Jon Gaston-Duran-J.R. Towles) an out later attempting to score from first when Matt Clark doubled to right-center.
Corpus Christi broke through in the fourth by dropping missiles into left-center field. Steele's lead-off double and consecutive singles by Duran and Koby Clemens essentially followed the same track off Missions starter Corey Kluber. Duran, Towles (ground out) and Wladimir Sutil (infield single) recorded RBIs as the Hooks took a 3-0 lead.
Perez, who permitted four hits, three walks and struck out two, left the game suddenly in the sixth after yielding a lead-off double to Sawyer Carroll. Perez threw 92 pitches, including 56 strikes.
Carroll later scored on Parrino's sacrifice fly to left.
Kluber lasted a little longer than Perez and threw 92 pitches as well. He was touched for six hits, a walk and fanned seven.
The Missions pulled to within one in the eighth at 3-2 as the result of Parrino's two-out walk from Edwin Walker and a run-scoring double by pinch-hitter Brad Chalk.
Left-hander Douglas Arguello (2-3) takes the mound for Corpus Christi Monday at 7:05 against southpaw Nathan Culp (0-2). It's $1 hot dogs and soda from Mrs Baird's. $7 nets a hot dog, soda and Jimmy Wynn No. 24 jersey t-shirt in the Monday Astros Legends Series.
