Corpus Christi Hooks News Release
CORPUS CHRISTI - Wynn Pelzer earned his third win of 2010 with a one-run, eight-strikeout performance over 6 2/3 innings as San Antonio beat Corpus Christi 3-1 Saturday night before 6,097.
The clubs have identical 13-16 marks.
Pelzer (3-3) struck out the side in order during the fifth. All of his strikeout victims went down swinging. Sixty of his season-high 94 pitches were strikes.
J.R. Towles, who won the Houston catching job out of Spring Training but was demoted Tuesday, scored Corpus Christi's lone run in his first appearance at Whataburger Field since 2007. Towles drew a one-out second-inning walk, advanced to second on Jon Gaston's ground out and home when Marcos Cabral lined a single to left.
San Antonio scored for the first time in 26 innings to even the game at 1 in the fifth. Hooks starter Jeremy Johnson faced one over the minimum and was hit-free through four. That changed when Luis Martinez doubled down the right-field line. An out later, Andrew Parrino plated him with a single the same way. Johnson left the bases loaded and retired for the evening after three hits, two walks and two strikeouts.
Reliever Edwin Walker (0-1) worked the sixth, then promptly walked Parrino and Brad Chalk to open the seventh. After Pelzer dropped his third successful sacrifice bunt of the night, Erick Abreu intentionally walked Cedric Hunter. Enter Henry Villar, who gave up a sacrifice fly to Beemer Weems but averted additional damage by getting Sawyer Carroll on a bouncer to first.
Doubles by Parrino and Kellen Kulbacki off Jared Wells provided an insurance run in the ninth.
Craig Italiano pitched the ninth for his sixth save in as many chances.
San Antonio's Corey Kluber (0-3) meets Sergio Perez (2-2) Sunday at 2:05. The first 2,500 receive a Hooks pink-billed cap, courtesy of Christus Spohn Cancer Center.
