Clearwater Threshers News Release

CLEARWATER, Fla.- The Clearwater Threshers put together a late-inning rally to force extra innings, but fell to the Brevard County Manatees Wednesday afternoon, 7-6.

The Threshers have now played in 11 one-run games and have fallen to 2-9 in those contests.

Harold Martinez opened up the scoring in the first inning, when he doubled home Pete Lavin from first on a 1-0 pitch.

Colin Kleven took the mound for his first start since being placed on the disabled list after an appearance against the Lakeland Flying Tigers on Apr. 13. He went 3.2 innings, allowing one run on five hits to go along with a walk and a strikeout, while throwing 65 pitches.

Kleven looked poised to get out of a jam in the second inning after allowing a leadoff double to Michael Reed. He was able to retire Victor Roache and Brandon Macias, but Yadiel Rivera singled up the middle to tie the game at one.

Brevard County (14-12) took the lead in the sixth by sending 10 men to the plate and plating five runs - two earned - off of reliever Luis Paulino.

Clearwater (5-21) responded by rallying for three runs in the bottom-half of the inning.

Brian Pointer led off the inning with an inside-the-park homerun that caromed off the wall in left-center and skipped away from centerfielder Tyrone Taylor.

Angelo Mora followed by reaching on a wild throw by shortstop Orlando Arcia and advanced to second after the ball bounced off the wall behind first base and rolled out to shallow right field.

KC Serna singled to put runners on the corners, and Lavin singled with a high chopper that landed in right field to drive in Mora and send Serna to third.

Martinez hit into a 6-4-3 double play to plate Serna and cut the Threshers' deficit to 6-4.

Martinez wasn't finished driving in runs. With two out in the eighth, the Threshers' third baseman connected on his second homerun of the season, a two-run blast into the Clearwater bullpen, to tie the game at six. Martinez finished the game with three RBI.

The Threshers had a chance to end the game in the bottom of the ninth when Pointer came to the plate with Anthony Phillips on third. Pointer attempted a bunt to the right side of the infield, but was out by half a step as first baseman Michael Garza dove to beat Pointer to the bag for the final out of the inning and send the game into extras.

Lee Ridenhour came on in relief of Colton Murray (2-2) in the 11th inning with two runners on and allowed Macias to single home Taylor from second to give the Manatees a one-run lead.

Clearwater had a chance to tie things up in the bottom of the inning when Anthony Phillips reached on a two-out walk and advanced to second on a Justin Parr single. Chad Carman would go down swinging to end the game.

Chad Pierce (1-0) picked up the win for the Manatees, allowing two runs over three innings of work. Tanner Poppe pitched the 11th and picked up his seventh save of the season.

The Threshers will take to the road for a seven-game trip beginning in Daytona. Game one against the Cubs is Thursday night with first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
