Waterloo Black Hawks News Release

The Waterloo Black Hawks topped the USHL Fall Classic hosts, the Sioux City Musketeers 5-3 Thursday, opening the event with their first win of the preseason.

The Hawks had not led at any point during the preseason until Ben Miller opened the scoring Thursday with the first of three Waterloo power play goals. Brett Beebe set up Miller's opportunity with a pass into the slot from the right wing boards 5:46 into the game. Lee Moffie added another first period goal at 11:15, blasting a shot off of goalie Nick Graves and in.

Sioux City closed the margin back to one goal during a power play at 2:30 of the second period, with Adam Schmidt banking a shot off Joe Howe from behind the net. Waterloo struck on an advantage of their own four minutes later, a Scott Pavelski redirection of Patrick Wey's shot. Again, Sioux City clawed back to a one-goal deficit with Donnie Hallmark's breakaway goal at 10:24.

In the third period, Waterloo was able to pull away, as Tyler Barnes scored during a rush up ice at 5:29. Sixty seconds later and on the power play, Matt Johnson banged in a rebound to make it 5-2. The Musketeers rallied with a goal by Mitch Bruijsten on the power play at 14:31, but the Black Hawks killed off a late five-on-three Sioux City power play to preserve the win.

Waterloo takes the ice for their second appearance of the USHL Fall Classic Friday at 3PM against the Sioux Falls Stampede.
