Edenton Steamers News Release

WILSON, NC - The Edenton Steamers (24-10, 6-2) rode an eight run top of the fifth inning and Troy Scribner's six innings of two run baseball to a 12-2 victory in the matinee game over the Wilson Tobs (13-23, 4-4) on Tuesday at Historic Fleming Stadium.

The Steamers took a 3-2 lead in the top of the fourth when they sent seven men to the plate and recorded only one official at-bat in the inning. Tobs pitching issued four walks and Edenton added a sacrifice bunt, sacrifice fly and there was an error. Jason Kanzler (University at Buffalo) took an RBI walk and Koby Kraemer (Indiana State University) hit the sac fly to give Edenton a lead they would not relinquish.

The very next inning the Steamers again capitalized on erratic Wilson Tobs pitching. Edenton sent 13 men to the plate and were issued four free passes, three walks and a hit batsman along with five hits and a Tobs error. Kanzler took an RBI walk, his 17th RBI of the season to make it 4-2 Steamers. Koby Kraemer followed with an RBI hit batsman to make it 5-2 Steamers. Blaise Fernandez (George Mason University) followed with an RBI infield single for a 6-2 lead and Michael Camporeale (University of Washington) reached on an error that scored two runs and the lead was 8-2 Steamers. Spencer Branigan (University of Pennsylvania), Wes Meadows (Otterbein University) and Madison Beaird (Arkansas Tech University) followed with RBI singles to make it 11-2 Steamers.

Camporeale added an RBI single to push his season total to 26 and it was 12-2 Steamer lead in the top of the sixth.

Scribner, Tealsey and Eddie Perkins (Tusculum College) combined to hold the Tobs hitless from the third inning on and only two Tobs batters reached base at all from the third inning until the end of the ball game. Edenton's pitching ended on a run of 16 straight Tobs retired.

Scribner pitched six innings and allowed two runs (one earned) on five hits, he walked three and struck out two and earned his second win of the season. He is now 2-0 for Edenton.

Jason Kanzler, despite not having a hit, reached base all six times he came to the plate and drove in two runs. He pushed his on-base streak to 13 games in a row. He was hit by a pitch, took four walks and reached on a fielder's choice. The Steamers strung together 12 hits in the game, all singles, and took nine walks against Tobs pitching. Fernandez had two hits and two RBIs, Meadows, Beaird and Camporeale had two hits and an RBI apiece, and Spencer Branigan added a hit and his 21st RBI of the season.

The Edenton Steamers are a proud member of the Coastal Plain League, the nation's hottest summer collegiate baseball league. The CPL gives college players the chance to refine their skills with the use of wooden bats. Players are housed with local host families for the summer and past experiences have been very positive for both players and hosts. Furthermore, the CPL has had over 1,000 alumni drafted and 52 alums - including 2011 AL MVP and Cy Young winner Justin Verlander - make their Major League debut thus far.
