Edenton Steamers News Release
HAMPTON, VA - The Edenton Steamers plated three unanswered runs over the final four innings of Friday night's contest to take down the Peninsula Pilots in 10 innings, 3-2. Edenton (5-3) has won four of its last five contests, while Peninsula (6-2) snapped a three-game win streak.
Devan Watts took the win for the Teal and Black. Watts (1-0) hurled the final two innings, shutting out the Pilots on one hit while fanning two batters and walking one.
Robbie Hiser shouldered the loss for Peninsula. Hiser (0-1) surrendered one unearned run on one hit while striking out three across 1.2 innings.
The Pilots opened the scoring early, plating a run in the bottom of the first. After loading the bases with two outs, starter Michael Messier blew a wild pitch past Stefan Van Horn behind the plate, allowing the Pilots to take a 1-0 lead.
Peninsula double its lead with another run in the fifth. Nick Walker knocked a one-out single and stole second, advancing to third after Van Horn's throw to skipped into the outfield. Kurt Sinnen followed with a single up the middle to score Walker and make it 2-0.
The Clams finally found some offense in the top of the seventh. Bobby Schuman led things off with a triple to left-center, and Van Horn knotted things up at two with a monster shot over the left field wall.
Both squads failed to scratch across a run in the final two innings, and it was Edenton taking control in the first extra frame. Leadoff man Tony Rosselli reached on an error, and Thatcher Coleman took advantage of the Pilots' mistake. The Clams' designated hitter popped a double to left field, moving Rosselli to third, and Peninsula left fielder Connor Sorge booted the ball to the wall, allowing the eventual winning run to come home.
The Edenton Steamers finish of the week with a doubleheader against the Generals in Petersburg. Game one is set to start at 6 p.m. Edenton does not return home until they host the Morehead City Marlins next Wednesday night.
