Peninsula Pilots News Release
HAMPTON, Va. - The Peninsula Pilots could not match the firepower of the Wilson Tobs Saturday night, as the Tobs rolled to a 16-5 victory at War Memorial Stadium.
Wilson got on the board early with a four-run second inning. Connor Leonard (Appalachian State) singled and Andrew Webster (Barton) walked to put two men on base with no outs. James Latona (Mercyhurst) followed with a double to left field to bring in both runners. Two batters later, Chad Frazier (Concord) plated Latona on a single to left field. Cameron Balego (Mercyhurst) continued the damage on another hit to left, this time a double that scored Frazier, making it a 4-0 game after two innings.
Wilson's bats came alive again in the third inning. Leonard and Webster got on base to lead off the inning on a walk and a single, respectively. Logan Baldwin (Georgia Southern) then scored both base runners on a double. After a bunt single from Latona, Jacob Jones (North Georgia) plated both Latona and Baldwin on a triple. Jones then scored on a fielder's choice by Frazier. The runs continued to come, however, as Matt Eppers (Ball State) tripled and Balego walked in consecutive at bats. Justin Bellinger (Duke) then batted Eppers home on a fielder's choice, and Leonard scored Polego on a two-out double to put Wilson ahead 11-0.
The Pilots responded with a run of their own in the third inning. After reaching on a fielder's choice, Nick Walker (Old Domionion) advanced to third after an error on an attempted pick-off. Will Shepherd (Liberty) plated Walker on an infield single to make the score 11-1.
Wilson again found the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Back-to-back doubles by Baldwin and Latona made it a 12-1 game.
After a rough few innings, the pitching combination of Devin Mahoney (Saint Louis) and Chase Randolph (Lincoln Memorial) offered a bright spot for the Pilots. Both pitchers each threw two scoreless innings, with Mahoney striking out five batters and Randolph striking out one.
Despite being down early, the Pilots showed some fight in the seventh inning. Evan Fernandez (Jacksonville), Ryan Coale (James Madison), and Cole Austin (West Virginia) loaded the bases with a singles sandwiching a walk before a walk from Connor Sorge (Central Missouri) plated Fernandez. Shepherd then scored Coale from third on a fielder's choice. Andrew Yacyk (Liberty) scored Sorge on a sacrifice fly, and Joe Poduslenko (Seton Hall) batted in Shepherd with a single, making it a 12-5 game.
Wilson scored four more runs in the ninth inning to make it a final score of 16-5.
