
Claggett Activated From Disabled List

Trenton Thunder News Release
(Akron, OH) - The Trenton Thunder, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that RHP Anthony Claggett has been activated from the Disabled List, and RHP Eric Wordekemper has been promoted from Trenton to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Also, RHP Humberto Sanchez has fulfilled his Major League Rehabilitation Assignment, and been assigned to Trenton. RHP Michael Gardner has been placed on the Disabled List.
Claggett has been on the Disabled List since August 22nd. He has spent almost the entire season with the Thunder. He also appeared in one game for Tampa (High-A). Claggett is 4-2 with a 2.15 ERA in 29 games with the Thunder, including nine saves. Opponents are hitting only .233 against him. In his one game for Tampa, he gave up four hits and one run in three innings for a no-decision. Claggett had a 0.95 ERA in his first 17 games with the Thunder. During 2007, he went 9-8 with a 3.69 ERA in 32 G (16 starts) with Tampa, including two saves. Claggett also started one game for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre (Triple-A), and gave up three runs in five innings for a no-decision. Claggett was originally selected by Detroit in the 11th round of the 2005 draft. He was acquired by the Yankees along with RHP Kevin Whelan and RHP Humberto Sanchez for OF Gary Sheffield (11/10/06).
Wordekemper was 3-2 with a 3.93 ERA in 33 games (one start) for the Thunder this season, including six saves. He had 46 strikeouts and 26 walks in 50.1 IP. Wordekemper was transferred from Trenton to Tampa on July 29th. He was 0-0 with a 10.80 ERA in two games for Tampa (High-A). Last season, Wordekemper had a 2-0 record with a 0.57 ERA in 43 games for Tampa with 33 saves. He led the Yankees in ERA, saves and games. Wordekemper was named the Florida State League's "Most Valuable Pitcher" and earned a spot on the league's mid- and postseason All Star teams. Wordekemper appeared in one game for the Thunder and threw a scoreless inning to earn the save. He was originally selected by the Yankees in the 46th round of the 2005 draft out of Creighton University.
Sanchez has spent time with the GCL Yankees, Tampa, and Trenton this season. He started one game for the Thunder (9/1) and gave up one run in one inning of work. Sanchez appeared in Game #2 of the Northern Division Championship Series against Portland and tossed one scoreless inning. He was 0-1 with a 2.31 ERA in 12 games (nine starts) with the GCL Yankees. He tossed a total of 11 2/3 innings in the 12 games. Sanchez struck out 15 and walked four. He made two starts with Tampa and was 0-1 with a 9.00 ERA in two total innings. Sanchez entered the 2008 season as the 12th rated prospect in the Yankees Minor League System according to Baseball America. He is on the Yankees 40-man roster. Sanchez missed all of the 2007 season because of Tommy John surgery. He was acquired by the Yankees from the Detroit Tigers along with RHP Anthony Claggett and RHP Kevin Whelan for OF Gary Sheffield in November 2006. Sanchez split the 2006 season between Erie (Double-A) and Toledo (Triple-A). He went 5-3 with a 1.76 ERA in 11 starts for Erie. Sanchez had a 5-3 record with a 3.86 ERA in nine starts for Erie. He was originally drafted by Detroit in 31st round of the 2001 draft.
Gardner was 3-5 with a 5.60 ERA in 33 games with the Thunder, including five saves. He appeared in Game #2 of the Northern Division Championship against Portland and tossed 2/3 of an inning without allowing a run. Gardner was selected by San Diego in the Rule IV draft and was returned to the Yankees Organization in Spring Training. He went 3-5 with a 2.88 ERA and one save for the Thunder in 44 games (three starts) during 2007. Gardner was selected by the Yankees in the 13th round of the 2003 draft.
Trenton and Akron, the Double-A affiliate of the Cleveland Indians, will play Game #1 of the Eastern League Championship Series tonight from Akron, OH. RHP Eric Hacker (1-0, 1.59) will start for Trenton against Akron RHP Kevin Dixon (9-11, 4.41 regular season). Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. The series will shift to Trenton for Game #3 on Friday night.
