Idaho Falls Chukars News Release

The Idaho Falls Chukars defeated the Orem Owlz 8-2 in the final game under the lights at Melaleuca Field in 2008. The Saturday night win came from great all-around play by the Chukars.

The Chukars jumped out in front early with a pair of runs in the first inning thanks mostly to a pair of walks and a pair of stolen bases. With Patrick Norris at third and Antonio Jimenez at second, Devery Van De Keere hit a double over the center fielder to drive in both base runners. Both the Owlz and Chukars scored a run in the third inning. The Chukars run came when Carlo Testa hit a line-drive single to score Shawn Griffin, who had reached earlier on a walk. Idaho Falls piled on three more runs in the fourth inning. With runners on the corners Antonio Jimenez hit a double to score two runs. Jimenez scored later in the inning on a Griffin single. In the fifth inning, like the third, each team scored one run. A double steal by Fernando Garcia and Alwin Perez led to an errant throw from Orem's catcher and Garcia scampered home. J.D. Alfaro put an exclamation point on the win with a solo home run in the eighth inning.

Seven Chukars' batters combined to walk eight times and five players combined to steal seven bases. On the base paths Norris and Garcia each swiped two bases. The top three batters in the order each scored a pair of runs. Jimenez had arguably the best line of the night, as he went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, two RBIs, a double and a stolen base. Seven of the eight hitters had at least one hit, and the two that didn't walked a combined three times.

The Chukars' pitching staff was equally impressive. Aneidy Toribio continued his late-season string of solid starts by going five innings and only allowing one earned run. Toribio also finished with seven strikeouts, while giving up three hits and three walks. Derrick Saito earned his first save of the season by pitching his longest outing of the season. In four innings Saito allowed no runs and only two base runners, while never facing more than four batters in an inning.

The Chukars finish the home portion of the schedule at 2:00 on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15 at Melaleuca Field.
