Idaho Falls Chukars News Release
The Idaho Falls Chukars combined defense, offense, and pitching to come away with a 5-1 victory over the Great Falls Voyagers Thursday night in Idaho Falls. The game was the first of four between the two teams at Melaleuca Field.
All of the Chukars' runs came in the second through fifth innings. Two singles and two errors gave the Chukars two runs in the second inning. Alwin Perez hit a double in the fourth inning to drive in Carlo Testa and put the Chukars up 3-0. After a single run by the Great Falls in the top of the fourth, the Chukars answered back with two runs in the bottom of the inning. A lead-off triple by J.D. Alfaro started the bottom of the fifth inning and he came home after a single by Antonio Jimenez. After a stolen base and wild pitch Jimenez scored on a Sean McCauley sacrifice fly.
The Chukars piled on thirteen hits in the victory. Both Antonio Jimenez and Carlo Testa both went 3-for-4 for the Chukars, and eight of the nine hitters had at least one hit. Jimenez and Fernando Garcia each stole a base to push the Chukars over 100 steals on the season.
The pitching for the Chukars was just as stellar as the offense. Aneidy Toribio, Justin Garcia and Blaine Hardy combined to allow only one run in nine innings. Toribio got his first win after allowing only the one run in five innings on the hill. Garcia rebounded from his first rough outing of the season by tossing three shutout innings. Hardy faced four batters in a scoreless ninth inning. The staff was backed up by a great defensive performance. The Chukars had no errors, turned one double play, and made highlight-reel plays all night.
The Chukars and Voyagers meet again Friday night at Melaleuca Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:15.
