'Chucks Win First on Road Trip

June 18, 2016 - Northwoods League (Northwoods)
Wausau Woodchucks News Release

Wausau, WIS - The Wisconsin Woodchucks (9-8) jumped back above .500 with a 1-0 win over the Lakeshore Chinooks (7-12) to open their six-game road trip at Kapco Park.

Ruben Cardenas (Cal State-Fullerton) drove in the only run of the game on an RBI double in the top of the fifth inning that scored Connor Heady (Kentucky).

The 'Chucks stranded nine runners in the first six innings, but those missed opportunities didn't come back to haunt them.

Lakeshore got a leadoff double to start the bottom of the ninth and had runners at first and second with one out, but Gordon Cardenas (Auburn) induced a game-ending 6-4-3 double play to earn his third save.

Heady ranged to his right at shortstop and sidearmed a throw to Cole Daily (Notre Dame) at second base. Daily rifled the game's final throw to first to beat the runner by half of a step.

The game got off to a slow start offensively - neither team scoring through the first four innings - but it was anything but slow on the clock. The game took only two hours and 23 minutes to complete.

With the win, the 'Chucks improve to third place and trail only Madison and Wisconsin Rapids in the South Division.

The Woodchucks have five games left on this road trip - tomorrow at 1:35 p.m. against Lakeshore, followed by two each in Duluth (Tuesday-Wednesday) and Madison (Thursday-Friday). They're off on Monday.

When the 'Chucks are on the road, follow along by listening to the voice of the 'Chucks, Nate Gatter, on FOX Sports Radio 1390 AM/93.9 FM or by checking out the Woodchucks' Twitter and Facebook feeds.

They return to action at Athletic Park on Saturday, June 25, for the first of two games against the Rockford Rivets and a doubleheader on June 27 against Wisconsin Rapids. Order your tickets today by calling 715.845.5055 or going online to woodchucks.com.
