Wausau Woodchucks News Release
WAUSAU-June 4, 2011-The Wisconsin Woodchucks picked up their first win of the season Friday night, as they took game three of a season opening series against the Eau Claire Express at Athletic Park, 7-6.
Reliever and UWSP right-hander Ryan Iverson took the win in relief, with Eau Claire starter A.J. Glasshof taking the loss, and 'Chucks sidearmer Cameron Amsrud earning the save.
After two scoreless innings, game three began with a similar trend- Eau Claire striking first.
Batting around and posting three runs on Woodchucks' starter Derek Howell, the 'Chucks surrendered another early lead.
After allowing a one-out single to Pat Ross, Howell would surrender a run-scoring double by Garrett Custons, a walk, an RBI single, and a run-scoring error on a botched throw from shortstop Shain Stoner, before loading the bases on a subsequent walk.
With three runs scored and three more ducks on the pond, 'Chucks manager Guido Aspeitia would call on Ryan Iverson, who would finish off the inning with a clutch strikeout and groundout.
After Iverson sailed through the fourth inning, the Woodchucks' offense would finally break out of their hitting slump, scoring seven runs in the bottom of the frame.
Aided by three Eau Claire fielding errors, six Woodchucks hits, two sacrifice plays, and a walk, the 'Chucks would score more runs in the fourth than they had scored combined in the first two games.
RBI hits came courtesy of Kyle Secciani, Austin Coleman and Derek Peterson, while Robbie De La Cruz' double would score two.
The long inning would chase Eau Claire starter A.J. Glasshof, whose final line came to 3.1 innings pitched, giving up nine hits, walking none, and allowing only two earned runs- as five came unearned.
The seven run outburst would be enough for a Woodchucks win, as Ryan Iverson, who was utilized almost exclusively as a late-innings reliever for UW- Stevens Point, would last all the way until the ninth inning.
Iverson would cruise through his 5.2 innings of work, allowing only six base-runners and one earned run, picking up the win- the second of his Woodchucks career.
Taking a three run lead into the ninth inning, Cameron Amsrud- the only reliever remaining in a depleted early-season bullpen, would come on and complete the save, after surrendering a two-run blast to Nick Addison, making the final score 7-6 Wisconsin.
The win improves the Woodchucks to 1-2 on the short season, before they welcome the 2-1 Green Bay Bullfrogs to town for a two-game series.
First pitch will be thrown out at 6:35 p.m. CDT, by probable Woodchucks' starter AJ Carman, who started Thursday night in Eau Claire, before falling victim to the 35-pitch rule in the first inning.
