Chrismon Deals, Champs Use Long Ball to Beat Miners

OTTAWA - Two home runs in a five-run fourth inning and an incredible outing from RHP Austin Chrismon helped the Ottawa Champions cruise past the Sussex County Miners by a score of 9-0 Sunday afternoon at RCGT Park in Ottawa.

"We played a good ballgame today," said manager Hal Lanier following the win. "That's what you have to do at this part of the season. We were able to get on top in the big inning with the two home runs. The bottom of the order did a good job at the plate today."

The nine runs were more than enough for Chrismon, who was dealing throughout the afternoon. The righty went the distance, surrendering eighth hits and no walks while striking out three. Chrismon was so dominant, the Miners didn't get a runner to third base all day.

Chrismon tossed the fifth complete-game shutout in Champions history and the third of the season - RHP Jordan Kurokawa threw a pair earlier in the year. Chrismon now joins Kurokawa, Wilmer Font and Phillippe Aumont as the only Champions to throw shutouts.

"Pitching nine innings in this heat was fantastic," said Lanier. "It was hot out there and he did a great job. He got a lot of ground balls and we played good defence behind him."

All five of the Champions runs in the fourth inning came via the long ball. 1B Vinny Guglietti hit a two-run shot to right and then CF Chase Harris smashed the ball to deep left field to give Ottawa a 6-0 lead.

The Champions kept taking it to RHP Jordan Cummings in the very next frame. LF Brian Portelli got hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and DH Sebastien Boucher trotted home. C Tyler Nordgren then laced a two-run double down the third base line for his first RBIs since July 17.

Every Champion got a hit in the game, with Portelli and SS Daniel Bick recording multi-hit games. RHP Andrew Cooper was sent to bat in the ninth inning - his first Can-Am League plate appearance - and flew out to the first baseman.

The Champions will continue their push for the playoffs in a three-game series on the road with the New Jersey Jackals getting underway on Tuesday, August 7. Ottawa will return to RCGT Park on Thursday, August 9 for a pivotal, four-game set with the Rockland Boulders.
