Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release

CARSON, Calif. (Friday, August 13, 2010) -As many as 200 Southland transplant recipients and organ and tissue donor family members will be on hand as Chivas USA hosts Donate Life Night this Saturday, August 14 at 8:00 p.m. when the Red-and-White take on the Seattle Sounders. 'Donate Life Night', a uniquely themed soccer match taking place at The Home Depot Center in Carson, is held in partnership with Donate Life California in order to create awareness for organ donation.

A valued community partner of Chivas USA, Donate Life California will be part of the pregame ChivaTown festivities and take part in a number of activities that will encourage Californians to check "YES!" when applying for or renewing their driver's license or I.D. card, or by signing up on the Donate Life California Organ & Tissue Donor Registry. Among Saturday's pregame activities, there will be a booth at ChivaTown with information about the donation process, as well as a pregame ceremony to honor those individuals affected by organ donations.

"Chivas USA is proud to contribute to a cause that affects the lives of thousands of families in Los Angeles and throughout the state," said Chivas USA Senior Manager of Community Affairs Nadia Gonzalez. "Saturday night's game will be an opportunity for us to energize our fans beyond their excitement for our team. We want to move and inspire them to celebrate life and register to become a donor."

Donate Life California's partnership with Chivas USA speaks to the team's commitment to supporting causes that benefit the community. Tissue donation, in particular, is especially important to athletes who are injured on the field and require reconstructive surgery to replace or strengthen their damaged joints.

Chivas USA and Donate Life California first connected thanks to Sergio Gomez, an avid Chivas USA fan and member of its Legion 1908 supporters, who is alive thanks to the donation of a kidney from his sister Claudia Pinzon. Gomez and his story of survival have inspired fellow Chivas USA fans to support donation.

"In the greater Los Angeles area, almost half of the families that say 'yes' to organ donation are Latino," stated Bryan Stewart, president of Donate Life California. "Their passion for life is reflected in their love of 'the beautiful game.' Both Chivas USA and Donate Life California celebrate life and the generosity of the Latino community, and they remind everyone that nationwide there are more than 107,000 people on the waiting list for a transplant."
