Chivas USA to be Honored at LMU's Latino Alumni Association Scholarship Dinner

CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, October 31, 2012) - Chivas USA will be honored at Loyola Marymount University's 30th annual Latino Alumni Association Scholarship Awards dinner on Thursday, Nov. 1 at 7 p.m. at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Los Angeles.

The Red-and-White organization will be recognized at the event for its commitment to Latino youth and its promotion of health and education programming in the community. Last month, Chivas USA partnered with the General Consulate of Mexico in Los Angeles and established a scholarship at LMU to support Latino students who demonstrate financial needs. On Oct. 22 Chivas USA's foundation, Fundacion Chivas de Corazon, held its annual charity golf tournament and along with the General Consulate, IME BECAS and LMU's Latino Alumni Association, raised $150,000 for the scholarship fund.

Among the other honorees at the event, the Most Rev. Jose Gomez, archbishop of Los Angeles, will receive this year's Community Service Award for his commitment to the Latino community, his leadership and his advocacy for Catholic education.

The third honoree is LMU alumnus Armando Castro '85. Castro, a partner in the law firm DLA Piper, will receive the association's Alumni Role Model Award for his service to LMU and LAA, commitment to volunteerism and charitable giving, as well as his outstanding career accomplishments. A former LAA scholarship recipient, Castro is a mentor to first-generation students attending college and an active member of the Hispanic Bar Association.

Over the last 30 years, LMU's Latino Alumni Association has awarded more than 1,400 scholarships totaling more than $3 million. In addition to tuition assistance, the program also provides mentorships and career development counseling.
