Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
Chivas USA Notes (0-0 tie vs. Chivas de Guadalajara (4-2 win on penalties), PETCO Park, San Diego, Calif., 9/14/10)
- Chivas USA captured a 4-2 win on penalty kicks after a 0-0 draw against Chivas de Guadalajara in the second ChivaClásico, held at PETCO Park in San Diego. Michael Lahoud hit the winning penalty kick after a Man of the Match performance as Chivas USA earned the ChivaClásico Trophy.
- Both teams used their first-choice lineups in the first half, and Chivas USA dominated but could not finish a number of good chances. Justin Braun and Alan Gordon pushed headers just wide of the goal, and Zach Thornton made two saves on the other end of the field.
- The second half saw each team make a number of substitutions, but the goalkeepers remained the stars of the match. Sergio Arias of Guadalajara made a diving stop on Braun, and Kevin Guppy of Chivas USA made the save of the game on a dipping shot from 'Bofo' Bautista.
- Guadalajara piled on a total of 21 shots in the match, to Chivas USA's 17, but neither team found the net in regular time. Penalty kicks were used to decide the winner.
- Each team missed its first penalty kick, with Arias saving an effort from Paulo Nagamura and Guppy stopping Patricio Araujo. Jorge Flores, Jesús Padilla and Rodolfo Espinoza then made their shots for Chivas USA, and Sergio Avila and Michel Vázquez each scored for Guadalajara. Ulises Davila missed his shot for Guadalajara, leaving the door open for Chivas USA's Michael Lahoud, who scored to win the ChivaClásico Trophy for the Los Angeles-based Chivas.
- Chivas USA Head Coach MartÃn Vásquez, on tonight's match: "'I'm very pleased with the performance of the team and very happy with the result. I thought we set the tone from the beginning and got us through the game. It would have been an easier game if we would have finished the chances that we had, and I'm pleased with the result. I thought it was a good turnout for the fans... the field was in great shape, the response of the fans was positive."
- The Red-and-White will return to Los Angeles tonight and tomorrow and will train on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at The Home Depot Center ahead of Sunday's match against the Kansas City Wizards.
- Next home game: Chivas USA finishes a busy home stretch on Sunday, September 19 against the Kansas City Wizards at 5:00 p.m. at The Home Depot Center. The Red-and-White will be pushing for a win to keep their playoff hopes alive. For more information, or for tickets to any Chivas USA match, please call 1-877-CHIVAS-1 or visit cdchivasusa.com .
