CARY, N.C. (Wednesday, June 12, 2013) - Chivas USA fell Wednesday night, 3-1, in overtime to the Carolina RailHawks in the Fourth Round of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup at WakeMed Soccer Park. Carolina went ahead on Ty Shipalane's first-half goal and the Rojiblancos equalized in the second half on Walter Vilchez's score. The hosts pulled away in the first extra period on goals by Cesar Elizondo and Brian Ackley to advance to the Quarterfinals.

Carolina took the early lead in the 13th minute when Brian Shriver threaded a long ball to Shipalane as he made his run up the right seam. Shipalane took control of the pass and stepped around Chivas USA goalkeeper Dan Kennedy, who came far off his line to meet the threat, finding the back of the net for the home side.

The Red-and-White looked to equalize as forward Tristan Bowen was able to get into range on a couple of solid looks at goal from inside the box. In the 15th minute Bowen got off his first strike from the right side but Carolina goalkeeper Akira Fitzgerald was there for the save. Three minutes later, Josue Soto sent a high cross into the box from his left-mid position, where Bowen was able to get off a header that was on frame, but the Los Angeles native was denied once again on the threat.

Chivas USA had a promising look at equalizing shortly after, as Soto chipped a pass over the top to Jorge Villafaña. The midfielder then turned and sent a low cross from the left side into the box as Jose Correa made his run into the short area. However, Correa could not get on the end of the pass with his sliding attempt as the ball went through untouched and out of bounds.

In the 57th minute, the Rojiblancos were able to break through and pull even at 1-1 with Carolina. The Goats capitalized on a free kick when Carlos Alvarez sent a ball into the short area from the right sideline in the attacking third to Vilchez, who was positioned near the far post to head in the pass.

As the match entered into stoppage time, Chivas USA got deep into Carolina's box and sent a shot that crashed off the cross bar. The attempt was followed up and headed toward goal on frame, which appeared close to bouncing inside the goal line. Had it gone in, the Red-and-White would have taken the late lead with stoppage time ticking away. The potential goal was not awarded and the ball was quickly cleared out by the Carolina defense, sending the sides into overtime.

The RailHawks pulled away with two goals in the first extra period; first on Elizondo's one-time finish from seven yards out on the end of Shipalane's cross from the edge of the right side of the box in the 92nd minute. Six minutes later, Carolina made the match 3-1 for good when Ackley headed in a corner kick sent in by Floyd Franks.

Chivas USA will now move away from Open Cup competition and return to Major League Soccer play as they travel to face Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Wednesday, June 19, beginning at 7 p.m. (PT) at BC Place.
