Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Thursday, Aug. 14, 2014) - Chivas USA announced today that the club has acquired forward Felix Borja via loan from Ecuador's First Division side Liga Deportiva Universitaria de Quito. Borja arrives to the Red-and-White after appearing in one match for LDU Quito this year and recently playing three seasons with Mexico's Puebla F.C. The newly acquired striker, whose contract was signed prior to the close of the International Transfer Window on Aug. 8, will be eligible to make his Major League Soccer debut against Vancouver Whitecaps FC on Saturday.
"We are extremely pleased to add such a gifted, international striker," stated Chivas USA Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera. "Felix's great experience in some of the other top leagues worldwide will help us not only on the field where we expect him to score and create goals, but also in the locker room where he can help mentor our younger players."
Borja joins Chivas USA with 23 international caps with La Tri, including his participation in the 2006 World Cup in Germany. The forward features extensive playing experience in his native Ecuador as well as European soccer. The 31-year-old made his professional debut in 2001 with Ecuador's Club Deportivo El Nacional before making the jump to Greece with Olympiacos F.C. Borja then moved on to the Bundesliga to join 1. FSV Mainz 05 and eventually landed in Mexico's First Division for stints with C.F. Pachuca and later Puebla.
With his addition to the Rebaño Angelino, Borja now joins fellow countrymen and former National Team players Oswaldo Minda and Luis Bolaños to form part of Chivas USA's new Ecuadorian trio. Bolaños was acquired on Aug. 8, while Minda has been a key part of the Red-and-White's midfield since signing with the club in 2012.
Chivas USA host Whitecaps FC at the StubHub Center in the series finale beginning at 7:30 p.m. (PT). The Western Conference showdown will be broadcast live on Time Warner Cable Deportes and can also be heard on ESPN Deportes Radio KWKW 1330 AM.
