Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
Carson, Calif. (Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014) - Chivas USA announced today the signing of Argentine midfielder Agustin Pelletieri who last played for Argentina's First Division side Racing Club de Avellaneda. The 31-year-old will be eligible to play in the upcoming 2014 MLS regular season pending the receipt of his International Transfer Certificate. Per club and League policy, terms of the agreement will not be disclosed.
"Agustin is a very experienced and important player, who will be an asset to our team," described Chivas USA Head Coach Wilmer Cabrera. "He has been a captain for a very important club in Argentina for the past four years so he brings leadership on and off the field, which is a very important aspect for us to try to get the results we need this season."
"Technically, he is a very smart player who knows his position very well. He is fantastic at reading the game, and has a very good idea of how to win, possess and distribute the ball. He is a well-rounded player in all aspects."
Raised in Jose Marmol in the province of Buenos Aires, Pelletieri developed his game at Marmol Tenis Club before joining Club Atletico Lanus in 2000 at age 18. As a rising prospect in their youth system, he made his professional debut three years later and that same season helped lead Lanus to their third final appearance during the Torneo Clausura.
As a key member of the "Granate," Pelletieri and Lanus qualified to the prestigious Copa Libertadores tournament in 2007 for the first time in club history after winning their first title in Argentina's top division during the Apertura Tournament. The club went on to make a second appearance in the 2010 Libertadores competition.
After a brief stint with Greek side AEK Atenas FC from 2008-'09, Pelletieri returned to his familiar Lanus, where he played for two additional seasons before moving on to Racing. Pelletieri spent three seasons with "La Academia" beginning in 2011, and took the club to the 2012 title match against all-time rival Club Atletico Boca Juniors.
Pelletieri joined the Red-and-White as a trialist during the club's second week of preseason camp and started in the team's 2-0 victory over USL-PRO side OC Blues FC.
