Club Deportivo Chivas USA News Release
CARSON, Calif. (Wednesday, August 1, 2012) - Chivas USA announced today it has acquired midfielder Shalrie Joseph in a trade with the New England Revolution, in exchange for Red-and-White midfielder Blair Gavin, a SuperDraft second round pick in 2013 and undisclosed allocation money. Per League and team policy, details of the contract were not revealed.
"We are very glad to bring Shalrie Joseph to the organization," said Chivas USA's General Manager Jose Domene. "He has been one the most consistent players in this League. He brings his experience and he will help us make that final push for the playoffs and hopefully MLS Cup."
The 6-foot-3 Joseph is a native of Saint George, Grenada, but grew up in New York as a teen. He joined New England after being chosen in the second round of the 2002 MLS SuperDraft after finishing a stellar career at St John's University (NY) and a brief career stint abroad. The 34-year-old has played in 18 matches for New England this season (15 starts, one goal and three assists), and has scored 37 career goals and recorded 34 assists. In 2009 Joseph was named one of three finalists for MLS Most Valuable Player, as he recorded eight goals and eight assists that year. Joseph was an integral part of New England's three appearances in MLS Cup in 2005, 2006 and 2007.
Before joining MLS in 2002, Joseph played for the New York Freedoms of the D3 Pro-League, where he scored seven goals and recorded one assist. He has appeared more than 20 times for the Grenada National Team and was named the 2007 Caribbean Player of the Year. In nine-plus seasons with New England he has made eight appearances as an All-Star and played in 261 matches for the Revs.
Blair Gavin joined Chivas USA in 2010 after being selected 10th overall in the MLS SuperDraft. He has appeared in nine matches this season, recording one assist. He enjoyed his most successful season with the club his rookie year, scoring three goals and adding an assist in 16 starts for the Red-and-White. Last season he appeared in 18 games (11 starts) and had three assists. The Arizona native attended national power University of Akron and was a member of its 2009 team that played in the NCAA championship. As a member of the U-20 National Team, Gavin scored a goal in the championship match against Honduran club CD Victoria in 2007.
Chivas USA has a week off from MLS action as it prepares for the third and final meeting in this season's SuperClásico series against the LA Galaxy, Sunday August 12, at The Home Depot Center for an 8:00 pm PT match. The teams come into the game tied with one victory each in the series. The match will broadcast on television, live on ESPN2 in English and ESPN Deportes in Spanish.
