Montreal, November 21, 2013 - Thursday night in Regina, Alouettes star linebacker Chip Cox was named the CFL's Most Outstanding Defensive Player at the league's 2013 Most Outstanding Player Awards gala.

Cox earns his first Most Outstanding Defensive Player Award following a season filled with personal bests which saw the eight-year veteran rack up career highs in defensive tackles (115) and sacks (12), good for first and fourth in the CFL respectively. He also recorded four interceptions and added twelve tackles for losses totaling 42 yards in 18 regular season games.

With his 115 tackles on the year, Cox broke former Alouette Tracy Gravely's team record 110 set in 1996, accomplishing the feat in Week 19 on his way to earning Defensive Player of the Month honours in both August and October while also earning a pair of Defensive Player of the Week honours in Weeks 13 and 17.

"Chip embodies what it means to be a professional" said Alouettes General Manager and Head Coach Jim Popp. "He's dedicated to improving himself and the people that surround him on a daily basis. He is a great leader and an obvious team player. I'm very happy that Chip is being recognized for an award that he really could have or should have won numerous times in his career already, and for making Montreal proud!"

Cox is the club's all-time leader in defensive tackles with 602. He became the first defensive player to earn the nod as the team's Most Outstanding Player since Montreal returned to the league in 1996 and the second player in franchise history to earn the CFL's Defensive Player of the Year Award since Anwar Stewart won it in 2004.

The Columbus, OH native is one of the most consistent players within the Alouettes' defence year-after-year. This season, he helped secure a crucial Week 5 victory for Montreal at home versus the Eskimos after leading the charge on a third-down goal line stand on the final play of the game.

In addition to his duties on defence, he also played full-time on special teams and has showcased his speed and athleticism via a number of touchdown-saving tackles, chasing down ball carriers in the open field. He recorded nine special teams tackles this season.
