St. Paul Saints News Release
ST. PAUL, MN (July 9, 2014) - It took 12 innings and a minute over four hours, but it was worth the wait as Dwight Childs, who entered the game in the bottom of the 10th, hit a game winning walkoff single with the bases loaded that gave the St. Paul Saints a 4-3 win over the Amarillo Sox on Wednesday night at Midway Stadium.
In the bottom of the 12th Evan Bigley led off with a single. With one out Bigley stole second and advanced to third on the throwing error by catcher Jeff Farnham. After two intentional walks loaded the bases Childs lined the first pitch he saw from Cole Stephens into left field for the game winner.
The game only got to extra innings because of former Sox player Keith Brachold. With the Saint down 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth Brachold led off with a solo shot to right, his first of the season for the Saints, to tie the game at three.
The Saints bullpen was perfect as Mikey Mehlich, Dan Sattler and Ben Hughes combined to go 4.2 innings without allowing a base runner and striking out six. Saints pitchers retired the 14 Sox hitters.
The Saints jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first when Jared McDonald doubled, moved to third on a single by Willie Cabrera and scored on Henry Wrigley's sacrifice fly.
The Sox, however, put up a three spot in the fourth. Kyle Bellows walked to lead off the inning. Kevin Mahoney singled to left and Bellows went to third. Brachold's throw went to third which allowed Mahoney to take second. Third baseman Joe Bonfe's throw to second skipped away from second baseman McDonald allowing Bellows to score and tie the game. With one out Farnham made it 2-1 with an RBI double. With two outs Derek Perren's RBI single made it 3-1.
The Saints made it 3-2 in the sixth when Angelo Songco crushed a solo homer over the right field wall, his seventh of the season. That set up the late game heroics for the Saints.
The same two teams meet Thursday evening at 7:05 p.m. in the finale of the three game series at Midway Stadium. Both teams are TBA. It is Irish Night at the ballpark. The game can be heard on Club 1220 KLBB and in the ballpark on 87.9 FM.
