
Chih-Wei Hu and Jake Reed join Kernels from Elizabethton

Cedar Rapids, IA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels and Minnesota Twins announce that RHP Chih-Wei Hu and RHP Jake Reed will join the Kernels from Elizabethton (APPY) and that RHP Ethan Mildren and RHP Todd Van Steensel have been promoted to Fort Myers (FSL). Brad Steil, Director of Minor League Operations for the Twins, announced the move.
The Twins selected Reed in the fifth round of the 2014 First Year Player Draft out of the University of Oregon. In four relief appearances at Elizabethton, he has no record and three saves in 6 IP, allowing one hit and striking out eight. In 31 relief appearances at Oregon this year, he posted a 4-1 record, 1.95 ERA and 13 saves, allowing 22 hits and nine runs (eight earned) with 15 walks and 34 strikeouts in 37 IP.
The Twins signed Hu as a non-drafted free agent on August 3, 2012. He spent last season with the GCL Twins, posting a 2-0 record and 2.45 ERA in 12 games (five starts). In 36.2 IP, he allowed 28 hits and 11 runs (10 earned) with eight walks and 39 strikeouts. In three starts this season at Elizabethton, he has a 1-0 record and 1.69 ERA, allowing seven hits and three runs (all earned) with two walks and 16 strikeouts in 16 IP.
Mildren appeared in 14 games (13 starts) for the Kernels, posting a 3-5 record and 4.03 ERA. In 73.2 IP, he allowed 78 hits and 35 runs (33 earned) with 16 walks and 54 strikeouts.
Van Steensel made 23 relief appearances for the Kernels, posting a 1.30 ERA, no record and eight saves in nine chances. In 34.2 IP, he allowed 23 hits and five runs (all earned) with nine walks and 45 strikeouts.
With today's transactions, the Kernels roster is at the Midwest League maximum of 25 active players, with seven players currently on the DL.
The Kernels begin a three game home stand with the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers on Tuesday, July 8th at 6:35 pm with the gates opening at 5:30 pm. The current home stand continues through Thursday, July 10th.
