Johnstown Chiefs News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs extended their winning streak to five games with a 7-4 win on Wednesday morning against the Cincinnati Cyclones.
The Chiefs hosted their second-annual Kid's Day Game with a 10:35 AM start time, but Andrew Sarauer and the offense were wide awake from the beginning. Sarauer set up Matt Robinson for his second goal of the year 3:10 into the game, and the Chiefs wouldn't trail the rest of the way.
Randy Rowe added a shorthanded marker for his seventh goal of the year to make it 2-0 in favor of the Chiefs at 9:52 of the first. Rowe's "shorty" would not be the last to be had in the game. Olivier Latendresse opened the scoring in the second period with a shorthanded marker at 3:28. Thomas Beauregard was awarded a penalty shot on the same Chiefs power play, but Kris Mayotte turned the shot away with his right pad. Ryan Garlock came right back with the Chiefs' second shorthanded goal of the game at 8:58 with Andrew Sarauer and Mike Knight assisting.
Specialty teams continued to play a big role in the game as Cincinnati's Matt Syroczynski scored a 5-on-3 power play goal to cut the Chiefs' lead back to one. The second came to a close with the Chiefs leading 3-2, but the score wouldn't stay that way long once the third began.
Johnstown struck 29 seconds into the final frame to regain their two-goal lead. To no one's surprise it was the Garlock-Robinson-Sarauer line that cashed in again. Sarauer shot the puck around the end boards to Garlock at the left hash who, in turn, spotted Robinson wide open on the back door. Robinson redirected the pass behind Kyle Gagewski for his second goal of the game, and third of the year.
Garlock and Sarauer then teamed up to assist Jon Landry at 4:54 of the third on the Chiefs' fifth goal. Landry's laser-like slap shot from the blue line gave him his fifth goal of the year, tops among ECHL defensemen.
Johnstown finally converted on the power play at 6:57 of the third when Sarauer got loose at the left wing side of the net and jammed home a pass from Garlock. Robinson earned the secondary assist on Sarauer's fourth goal of the year. Cincinnati tried to mount a comeback with a shorthanded goal from Barret Ehgoetz at 15:16, and an even strength marker from Syroczynski. The Chiefs' lead was reduced to two, and Cyclones' coach Chuck Weber pulled Gajewski for the extra attacker.
Johnstown's defense held strong as they were skating five against six for nearly the entire final 1:30 of regulation. After a Chiefs' clear, Sarauer got the loose puck first in the Cincinnati zone and put it into the empty net for his second goal of the game.
Garlock (1G, 3A), Robinson (2G, 1A), and Sarauer (2G, 4A) each had their best offensive games of the season and combined for 13 points in the game. Sarauer's six points were the most by a Chief so far this season.
Kris Mayotte won his fourth consecutive game as he made 35 saves on 39 shots, and the Chiefs power play ended the game 1-for-5.
