January 20, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Johnstown Chiefs News Release
JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Johnstown Chiefs, ECHL affiliate of the NHL's Colorado Avalanche and Columbus Blue Jackets, and the AHL's Lake Erie Monsters and Syracuse Crunch, announced today that they will be taking part in USA Hockey's Hockey Weekend Across America celebration on February 13, 14, and 15, 2009 with some great promotional events.
"Johnstown is rich in hockey history and tradition. The Chiefs are proud to join in USA Hockey's celebration and have a great weekend of events planned for fans of all ages to enjoy," said General Manager and Vice President Bill Bredin.
Each day of Hockey Weekend Across America has a special theme to celebrate the game of hockey, and help introduce new fans to the game. On Friday, February 13 it is "Wear Your Jersey Day." The Chiefs will be offering special group rates to area youth and high school hockey teams who attend the game and wear their jerseys. All Chiefs fans are also encouraged to wear their jerseys to school or work and let everyone know about that night's game. Additionally, the Chiefs will be having their annual team poster giveaway courtesy of the U.S. Army.
Saturday, February 14th's theme is "Bring a Friend to the Rink Day." If you are a season ticket holder, this is the perfect day to take advantage of some of your benefits. Use your buddy passes or buy single game tickets at the season ticket rate to bring a friend to the game and get them hooked on hockey! It's also Valentine's Day so why not make a date of it?
Finally on Sunday, February 15th Hockey Weekend Across America will close in grand fashion as Johnstown "Celebrates its Local Hockey Heroes." Members of Jets, Wings, and Chiefs teams from the past will be on hand to be recognized as heroes in the Johnstown hockey community, with a special ceremony to honor former Jet great Reg Kent. During the pregame ceremony, Kent's number seven will go to the rafters of the War Memorial alongside Dick Roberge, Don Hall, and Galen Head.
Kent was one of the best in Jets history and skated for the team from 1965-74. Over that time he amassed an amazing 818 points (274G, 544A) in 601 games, and he set the regular season point record in 1967-68 with 145 (38G, 107A). Kent is third all-time in scoring in Johnstown hockey history behind only Roberge and Hall.
The game on Sunday, February 15 will also feature the Sunday special of $1 hot dogs at the War Memorial concession stands, and it will be the first post-game skate with the Chiefs! Following the game fans are invited to put their skates on and hit the ice to meet and get autographs from their favorite Chiefs players.
Hockey Weekend Across America will also feature Johnstown's first ever Presidents' Day Invitational Tournament. The tournament will showcase amateur hockey talent from ages 6-18 and be held on February 14th, 15th, and 16th with games being played at Planet Ice in Richland Township, North Central Recreation Center in Ebensburg, and the historic Cambria County War Memorial Arena in downtown Johnstown.
Mark your calendars, the Chiefs are back on home ice on Saturday, January 23 and will be hosting the first place Wheeling Nailers. That game is the annual AmeriServ Customer Appreciation Night and seats are going quickly! Act quickly and be sure to get your seat calling 814-539-1799 or 814-536-5156.
