McLean Becomes 389th ECHL Player To Play In NHL

PRINCETON, N.J. - Former ECHL All-Star and Wheeling Nailers center Kurtis McLean became the 389th player to play in the National Hockey League after playing in the ECHL when he made his debut on Monday with the New York Islanders against Washington.

The head coach of the Islanders is former ECHL player and coach Scott Gordon while former ECHL player Daniel Lacroix is an assistant coach for New York.

McLean was named as a starter for the All-Star Game as a rookie in 2006, but was unable to play after being called up to Wilkes-Barre Scranton of the American Hockey League. The 28 year old had 56 points (31g-25a) and 56 penalty minutes in 41 regular season games and eight points (4g-4a) and four penalty minutes in five Kelly Cup Playoff games for Wheeling and 15 points (4g-11a) and eight penalty minutes in 32 regular season games and four penalty minutes in seven playoff games for Wilkes-Barre Scranton.

He had 23 points (11g-12a) in 16 games for the Nailers in 2006-07 and 32 points (16g-16a) and 24 penalty minutes in 55 regular season games and seven points (4g-3a) and four penalty minutes in 10 playoff games with Wilkes-Barre Scranton.

The Premier 'AA' Hockey League, the ECHL has affiliations with 24 of the 30 teams in the NHL, marking the 12th consecutive season that the league has had affiliations with at least 20 teams. The ECHL affiliate of the Islanders is the Utah Grizzlies.

There have been 34 former ECHL players who have made their debut this season and 133 have played their first NHL game in the last four seasons, including a record 47 who made their debut in 2005-06. Seventy-two former ECHL players were on NHL opening-day rosters this season and 333 ECHL players attended NHL training camps, including 139 who played in the league last season.

Former ECHL coaches working as head coaches in the NHL are Gordon and Bruce Boudreau of the Washington Capitals. Boudreau, who coached Mississippi for three seasons winning the Kelly Cup championship in 1999, was named NHL Coach of the Year in 2007-08 becoming the first former ECHL coach to receive the award. Peter Laviolette, who began his coaching career with the Wheeling Nailers, led Carolina Hurricanes to the Stanley Cup in 2006. There are 18 assistant coaches in the NHL who were players or coaches in the ECHL.

The ECHL is represented for the eighth consecutive year on the National Hockey League championship team in 2008 by Aaron Downey of the Detroit Red Wings.

Barton, Joannette, Leggo, McCauley, Nowak, Pollock, Rooney and Sharrers all worked the 2008 Stanley Cup Playoffs.
