Aces Sign Stefanishion, All-Star Skills Tonight

January 20, 2009 - ECHL (ECHL)
Alaska Aces News Release

READING, Pa. - The Alaska Aces have signed winger Matt Stefanishion to an ECHL contract for the remainder of the 2008-09 season. All-Star representatives Matt Shasby, Colin Hemingway, and Jean-Philippe Lamoureux compete in the Skills Competition today at 3:00 p.m. ADT, broadcast online by B2 Networks.

Stefanishion, a 6-3, 225-pounder whose most recent ECHL action came with the Fresno Falcons, currently is in the midst of a 25-game try-out agreement with Hartford in the American Hockey League. In 13 games with the Wolf Pack, the third-year pro from Alberta has scored one goal and accumulated 17 minutes in penalties. Earlier this season, he scored 10 goals (including a two in a 5-1 win at Alaska October 31) and assisted on seven others in 19 games for the Falcons, who ceased operations December 22, thereby making him an unrestricted free agent in the ECHL.

Shasby will compete for the National Conference in the puck control relay, while Hemingway will take part in the accuracy shooting event. Both skaters will be part of the breakaway relay team. Lamoureux will face six American Conference shooters in the breakaway relay event and two in the rapid-fire competition. The National Conference won the Skills event, 19-16, last year, and the game, 10-7. The 17th annual ECHL All-Star Game will be held tomorrow at 3:00 p.m. ADT. In the 11 years that the Skills event has been part of ECHL All-Star Week, the team winning the skills competition has gone on to win the actual game every time.

Alaska (23-14-2) returns to league play Friday at Bakersfield, where the Aces split a pair of games two weeks ago, with the face-off at 6:00 p.m. ADT. Alaska also plays Saturday night in Stockton at 6:30 p.m. ADT. Lamoureux will start both contests, as Marek Schwarz has left the club after an agreement was reached between the St. Louis Blues (the Aces NHL affiliate) and a team in the Czech Republic for the balance of this season. Each game will be broadcast live on KFQD AM 750, with the Peanut Farm Pre-Game Show getting underway 15 minutes prior to the opening puck drop.
