Chiefs Split Doubleheader with Quad Cities

PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs split a doubleheader with the Quad Cities River Bandits, losing game one 11-3 and winning game two 4-2 on Sunday afternoon. The Chiefs are 7-3 in the second half and 44-35 overall.

In game one, Quad Cities scored four runs in the first inning against Chiefs starter Luis Perdomo, making his team debut. With two outs and two runners in scoring position, Jon Kemmer doubled for an early 2-0 River Bandits lead. Ronnie Mitchell singled in Kemmer and Brett Booth followed with a single to score Tyler White, who had walked, to make the score 4-0.

The Chiefs got on the board with a run in the second against River Bandits starter Chris Lee as Mason Katz hit his 13th home run of the year to lead off the frame. Quad Cities got an unearned run in the third when Chase McDonald led off with a double, moved to third on a passed ball and scored on White's sacrifice fly.

The River Bandits broke the game open with three runs in the fifth and two more in the sixth for a 10-2 cushion. The Chiefs scored a pair of unearned runs in the bottom of the sixth against Astros rehabbing pitcher Anthony Bass. After Bass retired the first two batters, Justin Ringo reached on an error by second baseman Jose Fernandez and scored on Carson Kelly's double. Katz followed by popping up to shallow right and Fernandez couldn't make the catch for his second error as Kelly scored to make it 10-3. Quad Cities got the final run of the game in the seventh for an 11-3 final.

Perdomo (0-1) went the first 4 2/3 innings allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits with four walks and six strikeouts to get the loss. Robert Stock tossed an inning allowing four runs on seven hits with two strikeouts. Brandon Lee pitched the final 1 1/3 innings allowing a run on two hits with two strikeouts.

In game two, Quad Cities scored first again with a run in the second inning against Chiefs starter Kevin Herget. Kemmer and White hit back-to-back one-out singles and after a strikeout, Jake Rodriguez lined a single to left to plate Kemmer for a 1-0 River Bandits lead.

Each team hit a solo home run in their half of the fourth inning. McDonald went deep to lead off the top of the frame and Katz answered with his second of the twinbill with one out in the bottom half.

The Chiefs took the lead with a pair of runs in the fifth. Richy Pedroza lined the first pitch of the inning off the wall in right for a double and moved to third on a wild pitch. Vaughn Bryan walked and stole second to put two runners in scoring position. CJ McElroy Jr. hit a ground ball to second to score Pedroza to tie the game as Bryan went to third. Ringo lined a single up the middle, scoring Bryan and giving the Chiefs a 3-2 lead.

The Chiefs got insurance in the sixth as Steve Bean led off with a double. After moving to third on a ground out, Bean scored on a single by Pedroza to cap the scoring at 4-2.

Herget pitched the first four innings allowing two runs on five hits with five strikeouts. Jhonny Polanco (2-0) tossed the final three shutout innings on one hit with a walk and three strikeouts to earn the relief win.
