Lansing Lugnuts News Release
MIDLAND, Mich. - The Great Lakes Loons (5-5, 39-41) held off a late Lansing Lugnuts (5-4, 38-41) rally to take a 3-2 win on Sunday afternoon at Dow Diamond.
Trailing 3-1, the Lugnuts brought put the go-ahead on base in the top of the ninth inning with no outs, but Great Lakes reliever Victor Araujo (Save, 3) sat down the next three batters to close out the game.
Lansing opened the ninth with three consecutive hits, including an RBI single by Mitch Nay, but a botched sacrifice bunt attempt by Derrick Loveless allowed Araujo to throw out the lead runner, Matt Dean, at third for the first out. Araujo struck out David Harris and coaxed Daniel Klein to ground out to end the game.
The Lugs' comeback bid began in the eighth inning after manager John Tamargo, Jr. was ejected by home plate umpire Nathan Caldwell. Harris immediately responded with a double, coming plateward on a Jason Leblebijian sacrifice fly to cut the deficit to 3-1. Second baseman Dickie Joe Thon followed with a triple, but Victor Arano (Hold, 1) retired Chaz Frank to end the threat.
The Loons opened the scoring in the first inning with a solo home run by second baseman Jesmuel Valentin off starter Shane Dawson (Loss, 2-4).
Dawson rebounded to finish with five innings pitched, allowing one run on four hits and three walks.
The score held at 1-0 until Great Lakes worked a pair of leadoff walks from reliever Adaric Kelly in the seventh inning and plated both runners to pull ahead 3-0.
Great Lakes starter Greg Harris (Win, 6-5) pitched five scoreless innings, surrounding just two hits and two walks with five strikeouts.
Lansing looks to take the finale of the four-game series on Monday night at Dow Diamond with knuckleballer Frank Viola (2-1, 3.54) on the mound. Right-hander Jonathan Martinez (6-5, 3.32) will start for Great Lakes.
